In my experience the term "lumber room" was used is a similar way to that described in the article but more for the common people and not used for the storage of expensive furniture but rather miscellaneous bits and pieces. Possibly also could have stored wood for a wood stove. As a child I lived in a type of house now commonly known as a "Queenslander" which had a very small room attached to the back, this being the lumber room. It was more of a protrusion from the house than a fully fledged room as it wasn't supported by stumps at its far end and its roof wasn't flat but was made of curved corregated iron.
