although "King" would reflect the gender of the person, because the current heading will simply just not do Antares911 23:46, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

  • Oppose. I favor simplicity. There was no other Lunalilo, afaik. (As this was not an European monarch, those guidelines are not applied.) There is no necessity for the heading to show genders, etc. The article tells such things. 217.140.193.123 4 July 2005 06:24 (UTC)

It was requested that Lunalilo be moved to either King Lunalilo of Hawaii or Lunalilo of Hawaii. I among others oppose such moves. As can be seen above, the request received opposition and the poll went stale. Requests denied. Arrigo 13:07, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Arrigo please stop moving pages if the naming is controversial, in any case. Also do not remove renaming tags if the voting has not been clear and over. Please abide by Wikipedia rules and Wikiquette. Gryffindor 14:30, August 26, 2005 (UTC)
Instead of having to place opinions on multiple pages, we should follow the example of the users over at the Japan manual of style pages and move all related discussions to one place. Thus, I'm requesting that we move all discussions about the naming conventions of Hawaiian monarchs to Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Hawaii/Manual of Style.
While I'm discussing this, why is it that only two Hawaiian article pages are being proposed for movement? We need a set format for naming related articles. We won't get that when we have an article named Kamehameha V and another article named Lunalilo of Hawaii. 青い(Aoi) 06:25, 27 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

It was requested that this article be renamed but there was no consensus for it be moved. Dragons flight 02:49, September 1, 2005 (UTC)

Royal consorts and monarchs

[edit]

hi there. i´m trying to get a discussion going to change the rules on naming consorts, monarchs, etc.. it´s a bit of mess at the moment. maybe you wanna join in and give your opinion? feel free [1] cheers Antares911 23:48, 21 Jun 2005 (UTC)

Well, friend Antares, I've certainly never heard the king in question called "Lunalilo I" before! Attaching the numeral I to the name of a king when there was and is no subsequent king by that name is not the custom in Hawaii, any more than in Britain; the form "Lunalilo I" is no more proper than the form "Victoria I". The automatic use of a number is evidently the custom in some countries (e.g. Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, Hussein I of Jordan, etc.), but not in Hawaii.

That said, the title of an article on a monarch should as a general rule follow the form "[MONARCH'S NAME] [MONARCH'S NUMBER (if any)] of [NAME OF KINGDOM]". This is necessary because such citations should follow a uniform system. If you're going to say "Louis XIV of France" or "Richard I of England" or "Charles XII of Sweden", then you must (for the sake of consistency) specify, in the title of the article on Lunalilo, what kingdom he was king of. This is only common sense.

But I would also protest against the use of "Lunalilo of Hawaii", "Kamehameha V of Hawaii", etc. The proper style is not "of Hawaii" but rather "of the Hawaiian islands". This title was consistently used, despite the fact that the country itself was called in all other contexts the Kingdom of Hawaii. Tom129.93.17.202 (talk) 18:39, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Kamehameha V and Absolute Monarchy

[edit]

Can anyone cite their sources as far as Lot (Kamehameha V) increasing powers of his office as well as restoring absolute monarchy. Is there someone going through notes that we have no access to, or is it all just hearsay? We already are aware of the changes that Lot did in the 1864 Constitution from the 1852 Constitution such as Article 48 of the 1864 Constitution where it states: The Legislature has full power and authority to amend the Constitution as hereinafter provided; and from time to time to make all manner of wholesome laws, not repugnant to the provisions of the Constitution. Compare that to Article 45 of the 1852 Constitution where it states: All important business for the Kingdom which the King chooses to transact in person, he may do, but not without the approbation of the Kuhina Nui. The King and Kuhina Nui shall have a negative on each other's public acts.

So how is it that Kamehameha V was trying to increase the powers of his office trying to restore the absolute monarchy when his own predecessors were the ones exercising more of an absolute monarchy than he was? Wasn't Article 48 just one of the articles that clearly points that out? Article 20 of the 1864 Constitution clearly states: The Supreme Power of the Kingdom in its exercise, is divided into the Executive, Legislative, and udicial; these shall always be preserved distinct, and no Judge of a Court of Record shall ever be a member of the Legislative Assembly. Unlike Article 45 of the 1852 Constitution where it mentions the King chooses to transact but not without the approbation of the Kuhina Nui. Mamoahina 08:19, 8 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Odd Phraseology

[edit]

What on earth does "one of the only non-Kalakaua royals to write music" mean? One might as well call Liliuokalani or Kalakaua "one of the only Kalakauas to write music" or Thomas Jefferson and George Washington "two of the only Virginians to be elected US President." How many other music-writing non-Kalakaua royals were there? Or does the article mean he was the only non-Kalakaua royal to write music? Tom129.93.17.202 (talk) 18:21, 1 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Presumptive Governor of Oahu

[edit]

I'm kicking myself a little right now. I remember reading recently that Lunalilo was raised to presumptively be Governor of Oahu after marrying Victoria Kamamalu which was planned since the Royal School days. This basically fell into the plans that Victoria would be Kuhina Nui, Alexander Liholiho as King, Lot Kapuaiwa as Governor of Maui and Moses Kekuaiwa as Governor of Kauai. This other information can be found in most sources but not the one I am trying to remember which mentions Lunalilo. Hopefully the source can be found again. I just remember that the passage I am forgetting did not mention Moses or something like that saying the Governorship of Kauai or Hawaii was with another family.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 05:09, 2 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

It was Elizabeth Kekaaniau.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 04:45, 22 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Religion

[edit]

Removed the part of the infobox claiming he was an Anglican.. There is some indication that he, Bernice Pauahi Bishop, Princess Victoria and Liliuokalani (until 1895) worshipped in the Protestant denomination of the missionaries (Congregationalist-Prebysterians). We can be sure that he was a Protestant though.--KAVEBEAR (talk) 07:36, 29 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Interaction with the Duke of Edinburgh

[edit]

Interesting interaction between Lunalilo and the Duke of Edinburgh from the recollection of Mary Jane Kekulani Fayerweather Davison Montano [2]:

"His Majesty asked his cousin Prince Lunalilo, to go out and call on the Duke. The prince, who afterwards became King Lunalilo, said, "No, let the Duke call on me when he comes ashore; I am a prince of this land and he is a prince of his land."" KAVEBEAR (talk) 03:05, 17 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
