when did Kiwi Ko renounce South Korean citizenship?

I couldn't help but notice that South Korea is missing from the nationalities in the fact box. Perhaps a Kiwi Wikipedian would care to explain why this is so? I ask this because I have noticed that in other articles about famous people, even for those not born in New Zealand, if a person does indeed have Kiwi citizenship, perhaps through a parent, this is always mentioned, even when it plays no part in the notability of the person concerned. Presumably Kiwi Wikipedians have determined that Kiwi Ko being born in South Korea in no way contributes to her notability. That's fine. But what we need is some consistency. There are a number of articles on the Wikipedia where Kiwi nationality is mentioned, in cases in which I would contend that any possible Kiwi nationality is irrelevant to the notability of the person in question. I would like to change some of these articles to reflect this, but fear starting an edit war with some of the more aggressive Kiwi Wikipedians. Theodore D (talk) 05:18, 28 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ko is a New Zealand citizen, has lived in NZ since she was a preschooler, travels on a New Zealand passport, and was required by South Korean law to renounce her Korean citizenship (dual citizenship not allowed by that country). She self-identifies as a New Zealand citizen (see her website). The factbox mentions that she was born in Seoul, and the first sentence of the article gives her Korean name in Hangeul. With regards to your assertion that Kiwi Wikipedians can be "aggressive", I see from your identity page that you have made insulting comments on other NZ-related topics ("Pavlova" being one example). I would suggest that you choose more neutral language when commenting on articles.

I'm going to nominate this article for inclusion in the "In the News" section on the main page, with the update on Ko being the youngest player to win Player of the Year. I'm not familiar enough with the sport though to update the page with her wins from this tournament - here's a source which states them, is someone else able to update the article correctly? With this edit, I moved the MNZM instalation picture to the infobox and lede. It is the most recent picture of her in Wikimedia Commons. We need a 2021 picture which more recently and better represents her. Typically, this will require copyright release from one of her sponsors or a publication. Amatuer career

I would like to see a revision of the amateur part of Ko's career. Currently it is provided in two sections (Women's NSW Open and Canadian Women's Open) which are significant and should be retained as topics but it drives the text around those events and not the scope of her amateur career including her No.1 status (which should also be (in my view), along with her professional No.1 status, in the achievement box on the right). Specifically it misses key points like the dual award of the Smyth Salver at the British Women's Open - this being more significant since she is one of the golfers to be awarded this and win the Women's Open). It seems unusual to have the record noted in the wiki site for the major but not in the personal site. Other Smyth Salver winners have this achievement recorded in their individual Wiki pages - a recent example is Rose Zhang who has it recorded in her Amateur Career discussion. First winner of both European Majors since joint LET/LPGA recognition

It seems worthy to note that Ko is the first woman to win both the Women's Open and the Evian Championship since they were designated Majors by both the LET and LPGA. Since 2013 is relatively recent history but it is clearly not a straightforward achievement and being first to accomplish it is impressive. Further they are the only two majors recognised by the LET although when this was first the case is not clear (to me). If this is mentioned it is likely appropriate to note that there were previous winners of both the British Women's Open and the Evian Championship prior to both of them being agreed as 'Major Championships': Laura Davies (EC 1995, 1996 + BWO 1986); Annika Sorenstam (EC 2000, 2002 + BWO 2003); Karrie Webb (EC 2006 + BWO 1995, 1997, 2002); Jiyai Shin (EC 2010 + BWO 2008, 2012); Inbee Park (EC 2012 + BWO 2015). Clearly some of the best to play the game over the past 3 decades. It seems to me rather cumbersome to include all of that within Ko's individual wiki entry but it could be summarised with a comment plus a note e.g. "With the attainment of the Women's Open championship Ko became the first woman to win both European Majors since they were designated as Women's Major Golf Championships by both the LPGA and LET (i.e. from 2013).*" (Note:) * "Previous winners of both the Evian Championship and the British Women's Open, prior to both being determined as 'Majors', were: Laura Davies, Annika Sorenstam, Karrie Webb, Jiyai Shin and Inbee Park."
