The Métis National Council is NOT represented in s. 35 of the Constitution Act 1982. The Métis National Council represents some members of the Western Métis (BC, Alberta, Sask, Manitoba, Ontario) in their negotiations with state and corporate actors and coordinates efforts between provincial organizations at the national level. S. 35 is an affirmation of existing Aboriginal and treaty rights of the First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples. While the MNC can, and does, utilize this constitutional protection in their defence of contemporary Métis peoples and communities in the Canadian courts, it is in no way recognized in the Constitution Act. It is best understood as roughly analogous to the Assembly of First Nations. While the state may find it expedient to deal solely with a single organization, this cannot and should not be mistaken for official recognition OR constitutional recognition. 24.78.205.88 (talk) 20:04, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
