Basingstoke?[edit]

Basingstoke? Since when was Basingstoke in the M4 corridor? It's on the M3! Pterre (talk) 22:43, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. I've corrected it - though it's actually not much further from the M4 than Bath is. Ghmyrtle (talk) 23:43, 7 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In IT recruitment, Basingstoke is generally considered to be part of the M4 corridor, as it's a functional grouping of towns, much more than a literal proximity to a strip of tarmac. It's certainly considered closer to the M4 than Newport or Cardiff are, let alone Chepstow (spurned by the M4 some years back). The majority of IT recruitment agencies are unaware that the M4 crosses into Wales and are convinced that Bristol, being on the M4, is mere moments outside the M25. Andy Dingley (talk) 00:00, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think in many ways that's true, but it would be good to see sources that use the term "M4 corridor" to refer more loosely to the area between (say) London and Swindon (or Bristol). This 1983 article - cited in our article - discusses whether the M4 corridor extends (or extended) into Wales. Ghmyrtle (talk) 09:11, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In the days when I lived in Bracknell I remember a writer to the local rag who complained about Bracknell roads 'getting in the way' of her commute from somewhere in Gloucestershire to Basingstoke. Hardly typical though. Pterre (talk) 10:33, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My impression is that Basingstoke lies on an alternative spoke called the M3 corridor, also including Camberley, Bagshot, and all those places, which are high tech venues in their own right. Also, on another note, I don't think Wales or even Bristol is usually considered part of the M4 corridor. Sure, it's located on the motorway, but the term has a particular meaning which usually ends at around Swindon. It might be worth checking what reliable sources say about this.  — Amakuru (talk) 11:38, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

When I used to work in Bristol, it was axiomatic that (north) Bristol was in the M4 corridor. Now I live in Wales, it is equally axiomatic that the corridor extends there as well. Your own "particular meaning" seems to differ from the meaning held by people elsewhere. Perhaps an article needs to be created on the M3 corridor as well - I have no strong view. Ghmyrtle (talk) 11:45, 20 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, but like I say, neither my thoughts on the matter, nor indeed your view on what's "axiomatic" is really relevant here. We need to establish what is meant by the M4 corridor in reliable sources. And if there's a difference of view points in those RS, perhaps mention that in the article.  — Amakuru (talk) 17:20, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
