I sailed on the MV NORTHUMBERLAND IN 1965 as the junior engineer, she was built by JOHN BROWN'S CLYDEBANK in 1955. She was 499 ft long and 10335gt She was both general cargo and refrigerated. She was part of the NEW ZEALAND SHIPPING COMPANY,but sailed under the FEDERAL company's colours, the differance was N.Z. ships had MAOURI names ( RANGITOTO, RANGITIKI ), the FEDERAL'S had ENGLISH COUNTY NAMES( NORTHUMBERLAND,DURHAM,ESSEX,SUSSEX.). Two different companies that had amalgamated. Her MAIN ENGINES were TWO, TEN CYLINDER SULZERS useing heave oil, connected through MAGNETIC CLUTCHES into a REDUCTION HERRING BONED GEARBOX on to a single propulsion shaft THE REASON FOR TWO ENGINE SET UP was the reguirement for useing the PANAMA CANAL and the SUEZ CANAL, one ENGINE ahead the other ENGINE in reverse, no need to stop ENGINE just pull the clutch out of one and connect the other to change the prop direction. Auxiliary generators were THREE, eight cylinder RUSTONS, one running ,one on stand-by, one under repair /being serviced. She was sold in 1972 to the GREEK GOURDOMICHALIS GROUP and became the the KAVO ASTRAPI. She was sold again in 1973 to the GUAN GUAN (shipping)Pte. and renamed the GOLDEN CITY and sailed the oceans for an other five years then was broken up at HONG KONG IN 1978.
