Launched

[edit]

Why does the article say it was launched a month ago -- but built in the 1970's? 75.41.110.200 (talk) 17:54, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Should be clearer now. HausTalk 18:08, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There should, however, be a discussion of the vessel's history in the intervening decades. Without it, the article has a great big hole.--Piledhigheranddeeper (talk) 18:36, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If anyone sees the vessel's prior name, IMO number, or callsign, it would help in digging up details. So far, no luck checking against the big ship databases. HausTalk 18:50, 6 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This website claiming to list the World Shipping Register contains the following details:
  • IMO: 7234002
  • Name: PRINCESS ASHIKA
  • Callsign: 3DSD
  • Ship type: Passenger Ship
  • DWT: 223
  • DOB: 1972
  • Flag: Fiji

--Canley (talk) 00:23, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Mirimar Ship Index contains an entry on this IMO number. It appears the ship was named the Olive Maru No.1 when it was built in Japan in 1972. More details on the ship's rename, weight, etc. here. --Canley (talk) 00:29, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The owners are quoted as saying that the vessel had been "highly maintained". Can that quote be confirmed, since the expression is very bad English, and quite meaningless.JohnC (talk) 07:33, 10 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

History and Loss

[edit]

This article needs to be re-written in the light of the Royal Commission report published in April 2010 [1]

This showed the vessel to have been in a very poor state of repair and to have been declared beyond economic repair and unfit for further service by a Fijian surveyor in December 2008, that it was designed for use in smooth waters only, and that all three inspecting surveyors in Tonga, plus the insurance assessor, considered the vessel unseaworthy. The rust was so bad that on all the voyages in Tongan waters the seas broke in through the sides. —Preceding unsigned comment added by AJHingston (talkcontribs) 14:22, 6 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
