Nabil Talhouni[edit]

I have twice now deleted this person from the list of notable people from Ma'an. This is because his own article says that he was born in Jerash, doesn't mention Ma'an anywhere and is quite clear that, as a diplomat, he has spent much of his time abroad. The guidance for notability is quite particular & suggests that a person must have achieved notability because of the place, not just by passing through. Notability is not conferred on a place by the person.

Unless someone comes up with a really good explanation, I will continue to argue that he should not be included. I have not yet investigated the others on the list but would point out that lists of notable people seem to be generally deprecated. True that you might not find something linking Nabil Talhouni with Ma'an, but he became a diplomat because he belongs to the Talhouni Tribe in Ma'an. This wouldnt have come true without his tribe. The Talhouni family in Ma'an is one of the most famous families in the history of Jordan. He was born in Jerash because his Father Dr.Tawfiq Talhouni was a doctor working at a government hospital in Jerash which is about 400 Km away.

H.E Nabil Talhouni is from Ma'an even though he lived abroad most of his life, it does not change the fact that hes not from the city of Ma'an. He is one of the people in the government that represents the Talhouni family from Ma'an. Its a complicated issue, but this is how it works in Jordan, everything is tribal based, you can even do some research on the talhouni family in arabic and you will find articles about this family and where its from.

Yes, I can see that point but unfortunately I do not think it bears any relevance to Wikipedia's policies & guidelines. There are some odd ones around, eg: if someone can find a citation from a reliable source that the earth is flat then that is, as far as Wikipedia is concerned, worthy of mention in an article - even though it is demonstrably untrue. Wikipedia, in fact, cares little about the truth. I rather think that your problem here is not dissimilar: it is a conflict between policy and reality. Unfortunately for you, policy will win every time. I might be wrong here, but as things stand the name should not be there. If a consensus emerges to the contrary then perhaps the policy/guidelines etc need to be changed. I'll try to find some direct examples for you - I know that I've seen them fairly recently. - Sitush (talk)

The only labguage I am fluent in is gibberish! Let's see what happens here over the next couple of days and then if needs be we can refer it for a community decision - there are various areas of Wikipedia designed specifically to deal with awkward issues.
