Two observations: - In Spain, the Macias are not mainly found in the Northwestern area of the country anymore (where the name was originated), but in the Southwest (Extremadura and Western Andalucia), due to the Christian migrations to the South during the Reconquista wars against the Muslims. - The hypothesis of the name Macias being derived from the Hebraic Messiah is only sustained by people generally not specialized in genealogy or linguistics. It is a forced ethimology that does not really work according to the phonetic rules of Spanish linguistic history, particularly because the -ss- can never produce -th- in Spain (the pronunciation 'Masias' is a later evolution of 'Mathias' in Andalucia and Latin America).
