Why does this page redirect to "Macaque" without mention of the racial slur ("Macaca") that was uttered in the 2006 congressional campaign by George Allen (R-VA) to a dark-skinned man who was videotaping him, which many say cost him the election? scotts 00:13, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, and I'm going to change the redirect to Macaca (slur). Yes I know it's the name of a primate genus, but I guarantee you nobody typing "Macaca" into the Wikipedia search engine is looking for information about the Macaque monkey. Use common sense and try to imagine what the most frequently requested usage should be.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 14:35, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
That was inappropriate. Just because *you* think that no one would be looking for the monkey, doesn't make it so. Five years from now, no one will remember the slur, but the monkey will still be around. I've reverted. If you want to make a change, make this a disambiguation page. - UtherSRG (talk) 14:45, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is not my opinion but an easily inferred fact. UtherUSG, the fact that Macaca article did not inappropriately redirect to the macaque article until after the George Allen scandal is not a coincidence. No one cared about the word, no one began searching for it until after the incident. Do not attempt to argue that the vast majority of those searching for the word are not looking for information about George Allen and the slur. If you are as savvy with a crystal ball as you claim to be, come back in 5 years and then redirect the page.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 14:52, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless, it was inappropriate to make it a 180 degree redirect. If you are going to change it, make it a disambiguation page. Otherwise, leave it as it is. - UtherSRG (talk) 15:00, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For now, I've created the dab page and fixed all incorrect Macaca links using "What links here." Ultimately, however, the Macaca (slur) article should be moved to Macaca. I will request the move shortly and have other wikipedia editors put it to a vote. --The Fat Man Who Never Came Back 17:01, 5 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
A year and a half on and Macaca (slur) gets between 4500–8300 views per month, while Macaque gets 12400–14800. Macaca gets from 1220–1800. Stats from 2008. Jack (talk) 00:25, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see from user page that you are a fan of monkeys. I am a connoisseur of racial slurs. We are never going to agree on this issue, but I will ask the question anyway: are you suggesting that WP:DAB dictates that the number page views for two or more articles has to be exactly the same in order for a dab page to be required? 4500-8200 ain't a small number. They're both sought-after articles, and whenever legitimate disagreement exists about where an article should redirect, a dab page is best. And, um, welcome to the real world of Virginia.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 00:36, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Connoisseur of racial slurs eh ;) I hope you're not trying to put words into my mouth... I was replying to "Ultimately, however, the Macaca (slur) article should be moved to Macaca." I didn't agree with that, the figures were meant to back up the need for a dab page instead of redirecting to the slur. In the perfect monkey world it would stay as it is though. :) Jack (talk) 01:32, 19 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
OK, now I see what you're saying. I have since abandoned my ambition to move this page to Macaca (slur), as that idea would never fly. I think a disambiguation page is best.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 16:28, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, I agree with the current setup, I think - both seem legitimate and commonly-searched uses for the word, so a disambiguation page is the obvious choice. ~ macaca t | c 19:22, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
