Plas Machen[edit]

Are Machen House and Plas Machen the same thing? Danstarr69 (talk) 01:11, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Danstarr69 - probably, yes. Plas (Welsh) = Mansion (English), so it is likely a Welsh rendering of Machen Mansion. But some caution should be used. A considerable number of Welsh house are called “Ty Mawr”, which translates as “Great (or Big) House”, and which was used to denote “the main house of the settlement”. So it can be easy to mix them up. For example, there are at least 3 Ty Mawrs in Monmouthshire alone. If you can tell me the context of the question, I might be able to be a little more definitive. KJP1 I was correcting some filming locations on IMDB as I do occasionally (I'd do more if their "This correction applies to the location not just this title" button actually worked, but it doesn't, and it never has).
Sometimes I'll correct all the locations on a title while I have the page open, especially when there's only a few of them.
Last night/this morning, one of those locations which needed some minor corrections was Plas Machen.
However when trying to find a specific address I noticed that there was a Machen House too.
Parks & Gardens has pages for both in [1]https://www.parksandgardens.org/places/plas-machen and [2]https://www.parksandgardens.org/places/machen-house
However even though they seem like the same place, it's not very clear on there, or elsewhere, as the neighbourhoods/villages differ in most places, plus Parks & Gardens claims that Plas Machen is in Caerphilly, yet it definitely isn't.
They're both in Newport, Wales but where exactly.
I've simply narrowed down the address of Plas Machen to Lower Machen, as I don't know whether Lower Machen is in Graig or Bassaleg or neither of them. Danstarr69 (talk) 04:57, 14 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Danstarr69 - That’s very helpful and shows us they are in fact different places. Plas Machen,[3] and its garden,[4] date from the Tudor period, while Machen House,[5] and its garden,[6] are 19th century. If you’ve got Google Earth, you can see that Machen House stands in Lower Machen Village, to the north of the A468, while Plas Machen stands to the south of the road, and to the east of the village. We haven’t got an article on Plas Machen, although it is mentioned here, Grade II* listed buildings in Newport. We were right to be cautious! Hope this helps.
