Someboby has added a huge list of people with connections to Machynlleth, probably to make the place look more important. Since most of these people either dont have their own wiki pages or very little connection to the place it doesnt really help! David.j.james 08:56, 28 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

it could be either of these two things as well:

ma chynlleth "field of Cynlleth (a name)"

ma chynllaith "field of slaughter"

Pronunciation[edit]

The stress was placed on the y, but given the abbreviation I figured it was probably a mistake, and moved it to the a while redirecting the IPA link. Please correct me if I'm wrong. kwami (talk) 11:13, 30 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

TE, the stress is clearly on the a in the sound file. Anyone else hear it on the y, and syllabify it as mach.yn.lleth rather than ma.chyn.lleth? kwami (talk) 08:19, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It's interesting, but suggests that if this name were stressed on the penult, I'd hear it on the ultima—quite the opposite of this case. Also, it says nothing about your syllabification. kwami (talk) 17:09, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Syllabify it whatever way you want, I just kept the syllabification already there. What the article tells us is that stress in Welsh breaks all the rules and that non-Welsh-speaking English speakers can't expect to hear it right. I am going to attempt to re-record the pronunciation. Having lived in the Dyfi valley for 3 months (just got back) I have never heard it pronounced as per the current recording, even by those born and bred in Machynlleth. I know y in Welsh is often an 'en' sound (ENable) as in Ynyslas, but Mach's y is more like 'u' (fun). Possibly because Welsh spoken in Machynlleth is particular to the area? The stress is on the yn.

ch as in Scottish 'loch'/ y as in English 'fun'/ ll as in put your tongue to the front of your mouth as if to say l, and then make a sort of hissing sound by breathing out. Sometimes the English say 'kleth' if they can't make the ll sound, but that is wrong/ e as in English 'slept' Ric1972DIYmaniac01 (talk) 14:48, 4 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As a native Welsh speaker, brought up 15 miles south of Machynlleth, I can confirm that the current audio is perfect. I can also confirm that the stress is on the "yn".194.202.140.96 (talk) 14:50, 7 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for that. I wonder whether, as a non Welsh speaker (not even a native English one for that), I'm hearing this the same as you are? The sound file, to me, seems to put the stress away from the 'yn', and sounds like it ends in 'seth'. As a native Welsh speaker, what do you hear?

Bow Street (your home town, I assume) pronunciation can't be far different - not when people from Corris (5 miles North) and Aberystwyth (18 South) sound, to me, significantly more alike than this audio file. I had assumed this sound file was made by someone not local, but you're local enough to qualify - I just wonder why we're hearing different things? Have just listened to the file again several times: the first time, it sounded, as you say, perfect, then it didn't. It may just be that the quality of the recording is such that, having been able to hear it wrong once, my brain has now fixed on this mis-hearing and won't let me hear it right. Bizarre. Why should there be? Simply because she wrote A Machynlleth Triad? There is no mention of the town in her article, which one would expect if the two were linked sufficiently to warrant her being a "notable person" for Mach.
