Do any mafia crews/families also have made women? There was a Soprano's episode where there was a woman boss in Italy, though I'm not sure they can actually be made there The snare (talk) 07:54, 28 January 2010 (UTC)
No, only men can become made. In Italy it is common for woman to take over criminal rackets while their husbands are in jail, but they aren't actually members of a crime family. --Ted87 (talk) 00:47, 23 November 2010 (UTC)

- I propose to add the history of the ritual in Sicily where it originated and change the title into Mafia initiation ritual. I think the best way to solve this is to follow the structure of the Sicilian Mafia article:

- 5.5 Omertà

Suggestion
Could someone research then document in the article more about "made man"? Such as how family members of made men experience life and what is regarded as honourable and not honourable by the mafia (or is that just Catholicism?)? There must be more information that can be added to this article to do with a made mafia man. Suggestion
From Raab, New York Times, 1995: "Mr. Martens, in an interview, said Mr. Merlino was mainly supported by previous members of the Bruno and Scarfo families while Mr. Stanfa, in an unusual tactic recruited for his side several men who were not of Italian heritage, including the Veasey brothers."
It has been reported that John Veasey was a made member in the Philadelphia organization and was not of Italian decent. It would be interesting if someone could compile some information on any other individuals, if they exist, who were full members and not Italian, which I thought to be a prerequisite to be made. "Books are closed"
- "The books are open" is a phrase used in the Mafia to indicate that a particular Mafia family is ready to accept new members; conversely, if a family is unwilling or unable to accept new members, the "books are closed."
I've heard that before. Refs? I don't suppose anyone has a "wire" on this stuff. It's a little more personal than they let on, almost like "We decided not to hire."
Anyways, University of Alaska Fairbanks, where I graduated, is owned by the Usibelli, Alaska family, who told me "books are closed" and pursue a personal vendetta to this day. B.S. Mathematics and Computer Science. Adjudicated as a mental defective in a court of law. No firearms. No jobs. Ever.
