Excuse me, it is said that Suluc Mehmed Pasha was "the Ottoman viceroy of Egypt and Governor of Alexandria". Could you tell me what is the difference between a "viceroy" and a "governor" in Ottoamn Empire? Did Alexandria belong to Egypt in Ottoman Empire? He wasn't the general viceroy of Egypt (always a non-Egyptian selected directly by the Sultan), but was a regional governor for Alexandria (usually selected from the local Egyptian population). There were other regional governors, but I'm not sure how many there were. This man in particular was not the viceroy of Egypt, but a local regional governor (Bey) of Alexandria. Two comments[edit]

To Loveliaocyan: Egypt was captured by the Ottoman sultan Selim I in 1517 and it remained as an Ottoman province until 19th century. Alexandria was a part of Egypt. As for viceroy, in the 16th century Ottoman civil and military administrations were not issued i.e., each governor was also a commander. To Takabeg: Can you add Suluc Mehmed Pasha's name in List of Ottoman Wālis of Egypt. There are two names which may refer to him. But I don't know which. Turns out he wasn't a governor of Egypt as a whole, but only a Bey of Alexandria. Ithinkicahn (talk) 03:19, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
