Talk:Man of Peace awards

This group would do well to remember that there are many WOMEN OF PEACE, too! They deserve to be recognized. Mermaid7seas (talk) 08:20, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Public controversies.[edit]

I recall in 2005 there was quite a hoo-hah about Cat Steven's being given the award given he was avidly campaigning for the burning-alive of several thousand people, and the mass murder and ethnic cleansing of Jews, along with some pretty horrible stuff including inciting violence on international TV at a later point (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYnWtPytvhI) among others. He actively admitted that he wouldn't shelter a person who was deemed 'wanted' by Islam and would rat out Salmon Rushdie to a mullah to be taken away and burnt alive. The guys a total nut case and has a history of incredibly un-thought out and violent statements so needless to say the hoo-hah was well founded. Cat Steven's is not Yusef Islam, the man that sung about a peace train is long gone, and he can't make that any more obvious every time he opens his mouth. It's integral however that such an irony as a person actively engaged in lobbying for violence as a solution to his perceived problems being considered a 'man of peace' be noted especially given the awards history of other ironic nominees.
