Ornithological article?[edit]

This article looks a bit like a joke, even though it seems to have lots of sources. However, I have a bit of trouble swallowing the idea of adding it to "Wikiproject Birds," because of its interest to ornithologists. Marshal MacMahon (talk) 11:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Obviously, this article is meant to be tongue-in cheek. There is a similar discussion going on at Paul the Octopus. Having said that, fortune telling using birds are not all that uncommon in Inida and parts of South East Asia. I could not find any articles on this subject. And since Mani is currently getting substantial international media attention at the moment, it is a fun story and a side distraction to both the World Cup as well as the world of ornithology. :-) – S Masters (talk) 01:35, 11 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mani the fraud? ' Prior to his World Cup stint, Mani and his owner M. Muniyappan, used to see an average of 10 customers a day. Following his World Cup success, this increased to around 10 customers an hour'

Right so we can see the mani story as enriching his owner (DUH!)...Theres no indiction he made any correct predictions...certanily not all the quarter finals while failing in the final! Nothing succeeds like success..Paul the Octopus spawned a crowd of get rich quick immitators.. none more so than Mani.His owner professed to have no interest in the World Cup for years...so why this sudden interest by little Mani? From the pretentious Economictimes of India (July 10), which begins with reference to Paul, and proceeds from there: ' Among the predictions, the most contentious and jaw-dropping was when he picked Netherlands to beat Brazil. His legend and following grew after he was proven right and one of Singapore's big dailies, The New Paper, made him into a celebrity by asking for his semifinalists picks.' ... Mani plumped for an Uruguay-Spain final with Spain emerging victorious but the Netherlands proved him wrong, for once, by beating Forlan's team 3-2. Mani has since reassessed his options and has now bet on Netherlands winning.' made him into a celebrity? Mani's prediction of third-place playoffs?[edit]

Hi, does anyone know if Mani made a prediction on the third-place payoffs? The Uruguay vs Germany one. If I'm not wrong, it was Uruguay for him, but all the media hype is swathing what is actually going on. Thanks, and if you do know, do add to the Results table in the article. Hi everyone, I am heartened to see the furious editing by countless contributors (at least a few edits every hour) at this point in time. Much as we would seek to include every available information on Mani's ways, do remember Wikipedia's guideline on recentism.

Here's a quote:

Claim to fame[edit]

There is confusion about how Mani became famous. Some people are saying that the only source is that the owner himself said that it made the correct predictions for the quarter finals, however, this is not true. It was a reporter/reporters from The New Paper which asked Mani to make the predictions, and proceeded to have these predictions published in the newspaper. When these predictions turned out to be true, it started Mani's journey to fame.

I do not have time at the moment, but if someone has the time, please start a new section detailing these published articles in order to establish why Mani was chosen as a contender for Paul the Octopus. - S Masters (talk) 07:49, 12 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Really famous?[edit]

I can't find any purpose to let this article here on en.wiki. I think it is a mix between recentism, folklore, and gossip. Mani's predictions for Cricket World Cup 2011[edit]

There have been several tv and internet news articles relating to a parakeet named Mani; which stated that Mani had predicted Pakistan winner of the Cricket world cup 2011 three consecutive times and was killed by some Indian extremist political party Shiv Sina people. Is it the same parakeet the news relates to or some other; if so, it would be a sad but important addition to this article.Wikitanoli (talk) 18:28, 20 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you have a specific link? I've had a look around and managed to find a few web forum posts where it states that an *Indian* fortune-telling parrot/parakeet was killed by political extremists - however, Mani was (and presumably still is) living in Singapore... --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 03:18, 21 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pakistan cricket team lost to India in the semi final last night; so I guess the parrot story was untrue like the prediction; and there are internet forums discussing it and it was also on a Pakistani news tv channel; 'Geo News'.Wikitanoli (talk) 19:30, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Looks to me as though someone's been hoaxed. That's definitely the same footage of the Singaporean parrot and fortune teller from around the time of last year's football world cup finals. Take a look at this and compare. --Kurt Shaped Box (talk) 21:08, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
