"Desert"[edit]

The "A vast plain near the outskirts of New Orleans" derives from an unfortunate translation in an English edition of the libretto. The Italian says "Una landa sterminata sui confini del territorio della Nuova Orleans", which doesn't suggest a desert at all. Later, when Manon sings "E nel profondo deserto io cado", the Italian word "deserto" does not connote an arid sandy place in the same way the English word "desert" does.

For decades, this bad translation has invited wry comments about the lack of anything resembling a desert anywhere near New Orleans. I substituted a more accurate translation to forestall unnecessary confusion. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Iglew (talkcontribs) 07:03, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like a good idea to me. You might want to explain this in a footnote since a lot of people may still be familiar with the 'desert'. Best, Voceditenore (talk) 09:19, 22 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Still, since a lot of the third act is spent looking in vain for water, it seems that a desert in the sense of "arid place" really is meant. Angr (talk) 17:52, 9 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Little query about role[edit]

I don't have the score to hand, but do I remember correctly that the "singer" in Act 2 should actually be "Musico"? almost-instinct 09:33, 1 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

it would be great[edit]

if a moder performance history were put, not just late 19th century. FoCuSandLeArN (talk) 02:04, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, how about doing some research, providing references to reliable sources, and adding them in?? It's "the encyclopedia that anyone can edit" - but do please try to get your spelling correct. Viva-Verdi (talk) 03:45, 31 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Puccini opera template[edit]

{{Puccini operas}} It was unclear to me why {{Puccini operas}} (see box) has been removed from most Puccini opera pages, since I did not see any discussion. --Michael Goodyear (talk) 13:32, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

There's already a horizontal template at the bottom of the articles with links to all his operas, and has been for some time, so the links aren't gone, just in a different format. Voceditenore (talk) 14:27, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
In my opinion the former one was more useful - I see it was yours--Michael Goodyear (talk) 17:12, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, Michael Goodyear, I'm not following you when you say "I see it was yours". I didn't create the above vertical navbox nor the horizontal one nor {{infobox opera}} which is now at the head of the article. Voceditenore (talk) 08:29, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My mistake --Michael Goodyear (talk) 18:51, 7 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
