Difficulties

[edit]

Among other wilful obscurities, doesn't the article fail to explain the descent of the manor during its brief tenure by members of the Cantelowe family? After George Cantelowe died childless in 1273, it seems to have gone to Eleanor Cantelowe, wife of Thomas West and great-niece of George's father William III Cantelowe (died 1254). Pole does not explain her line, but Risdon says her father was Nicholas, son of John, a son of William I Cantelowe (died 1239). Why, though, did the manor not go with the rest of George's lands? Was it ever his at all?

Also, shouldn't the text explain that in English the family name was Cantelowe, spelled various ways, and only in Latin documents was it de Cantilupe? However, first antiquarians and now many modern historians writing in English use the anachronistic Latin form.[1] Clifford Mill (talk) 14:00, 10 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
