Article name: Should it be Maoribank rather than Māoribank?[edit]

I believe that the name of this article should be Maoribank, rather than Māoribank for the following reasons:

Maoribank is an English word, not a Māori one. While the prefix Maori- is plainly derived from Māori, the suffix -bank is not a Māori word, as Māori does not use the letter b and the consonants n and k would each need to be followed by a vowel.
The name originates from local early settlers in the mid 19th centuary, long before macrons were ever used, even in Māori. Since these settlers spoke English, the word they created should also be considered an English word.
The officially accepted place name, according to the New Zealand Geographic Board Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa (NZGB) website, that appears in the New Zealand Geographic Placenames Database is Maoribank. This name appears on published maps, as well as in other official databases, documents and on local signs, such as at Maoribank School.
There is no mention of Māoribank, or similar, in the list of New Zealand names with macrons.
The Māori place name for the locality would probably be Te Hau-Karetu, according to the Upper Hutt City Council website. Note also that the City Council uses Maoribank, (without a macron), and according to the NZGB, the Local Authority normally determines how suburb names are spelt.
About the only place that Māoribank appears spelt with a macron over the first a is in connection with this wikipedia article or copies of it on other websites.

So, if no-one objects, I am going to rename or move the article to be Maoribank. Does anyone have another opinion? - Cameron Dewe (talk) 11:39, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You have answered your own question: there is no justification for the macrons in the name. Be bold and move. Same goes for Totara Park: both were macronised without discussion by the same user, who got it wrong. Kahuroa (talk) 18:03, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks! You have confirmed my thinking. Perhaps I have been working too long on (other) wiki where I have needed to retrospectively justify reverting pages back to old names before I made them, (unannounced)! I have found that having non-English alphabetical characters in place names are a bit of a minefield in other parts of wikiland. - Cameron Dewe (talk) 21:25, 30 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
