Mercedes was not Queen; when her father died, her mother wsas pregnant. The governemtn decided to wait till the child's birth. If it were a girl, Mercedes would automatically be named Queen. If it were a boy, he would be King (as indeed was the case), but Mercedes would still be Princess of Asturias since she was first in line to the throne after her little brother. When she died in 1904 her brother didn't have any children of his own; her rights were transferred to her eldest son, Alfonso (who however was NOT given the title Prince of Asturias, just "heir to the throne"), till King Alfonso XIII had a son in 1907.

She is known that Princess Mercedes, in Spanish "Princesa Mercedes", not Infanta. The Infanta was her smaller sister.

Yes, I believe it. She was, according to several sources, Princess of Asturias. That's something special in Spain. They presumably used Princess of her, because of Asturias. She was of course infanta too, but in use, that title was subsumed by Asturias. Her younger sister was of course Infanta dona Teresa, who only after marriage received another title, plenty of them actually, for exapmle that of duchess of Bavaria.
