Notability[edit]

Following is a copy of what I posted at WP:BLP/N concerning this article:

While I understand the concern about the lack of independent sources, this does NOT appear to me to be a speedy delete candidate; her C.V.[1] shows quite a number of claims to real distinction: Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, President of the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, President of the American Ophthalmological Society, and a bunch of awards from professional organizations including a Life Achievement Honor Award from the American Academy of Ophthalmology. According to the excerpt I was able to see in Google Scholar from this article in the Archives of Opthalmology[2], "In 1988, Dr Marilyn Miller became the first woman to join the board of directors of the American Academy of Ophthalmology." WP:ACADEMIC says "For the routine uncontroversial details of a career, official institutional and professional sources are accepted"; her CV and the sources from her university confirm these distinctions. It's hard for us to find independent confirmation of this stuff because we don't have free access to the opthamalogical journals, but here are a few more mentions of her I did find[3][4][5] At worst, this belongs at AfD where it can get a chance to be better sourced before disappearing. --Arxiloxos (talk) 01:36, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I've replied to this at WP:BLP/N. I'm really happy for the article to be kept if it can be shown that the subject is notable. But we need good independent sourcing. Many people have great careers, which this person appears to have had, but that in itself isn't enough for notability. --FormerIP (talk) 02:28, 14 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
