Markus Näslund vs. Markus Naslund[edit]

A discussion about whether to use accents in hockey names has been started here: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ice Hockey/Player pages format.

Picture[edit]

Replaced the picture with a TSN image, though I'm not sure if it's big enough. If anyone can find me a better one, let me know.-RomeW 22:43, 29 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Found a better one at Flickr.com. The photographer allowed me to use it.-RomeW 03:27, 17 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Born-Again Christian?[edit]

I noticed that Markus Naslund is part of the Born-Again Christian category, but there is nothing in the article saying this. Also, a quick Google search yielded no results saying that he is. I live in Vancouver and follow the Canucks very closely, and I've never heard anyone say that Markus Naslund is a Born-Again Christian. Note that I'm not necessary saying that he's not, just that there doesn't seem to be anything confirming that he is. If someone would like to correct me and point out a source, that would be great.

I know he is, but if it's gonna be in the cats at the bottom, maybe it should be in the main article. But since I know of no real sources, it can't really be done. Marcus1060 01:23, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry it took so long to follow up on this, but nothing seems to have been fixed. You say you know he is, but you don't say how. Do you actually know him or know a friend of his or something? Because it seems odd you could know this without any sources. I'm pretty sure it's against Wikipedia policy to just add things like that, so I'm going to get rid of it until there's a source for it.

Hey I know he is a born-again Christian too. He just doesn't like to talk publicly much about it or anything and in reality it isn't entirely notable to include in the main article. I remember a few years back he was in a flyer as an instructor for a summer hockey camp called Hockey Ministries International, which combines hockey and Christianity. That in itself seems to be enough just to warrant it into the category. Croat Canuck Go Leafs Go 14:21, 21 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I found sources that say he is a Christian and I've added them to the article. Nothing about being "born-again" though.-RomeW 22:39, 30 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Captaincy confusion[edit]

The article states that the training camp was held in Canada when Näslund was appointed captain of the Canucks. Infact the camp was held in Sweden, starting Sept. 7th. Näslunds bio at the official website of the Canucks says he was appointed captain Sept. 15th. I have also checked out a Swedish source to make sure the camp was held in Sweden. I'm gonna add that + the bio of Näslund at Canucks.com as sources. Kaiketsu 21:29, 22 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Recent Vandalism[edit]

If I see any more vandalism relating to Naslund's family, I will recommend the page be protected for the rest of the entire NHL season. This is the ONLY warning being given. ThePointblank (talk) 01:47, 23 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gretzky's WCE comparison[edit]

The links to the existing references are dead, so I can't check whether the references are to support his statement or whether they are simply misplaced. Can anybody find alternative references for the section? I tried but couldn't find any. -- Skyezx // msg 09:55, 26 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Moved from article:
"The line was considered by many, including hockey great Wayne Gretzky, to be the best offensive combination of players in the world. During their prime the three players were featured on the covers of magazines such as Sports Illustrated and The Hockey News. Gretzky compared the 'West Coast Express' to the line of Mark Messier, Jari Kurri, and himself that dominated the NHL during 1980s while playing for the Edmonton Oilers.[1][2][3]"
If you can find a proper source for this section, feel free to move it back into the article. -- Skyezx // msg 01:36, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Considering that Gretzky, Messier, and Kurri didn't play on a line together, save for the power play, I'd consider it not an accurate source. However, I did find a Swedish article that has an interview with Gretzky, where he called Naslund the greatest player of today, which was 2004 or so I believe. Kaiser matias (talk) 03:55, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I added those references to that paragraph a while back, but it wasn't to support the Gretzky statement. It was to support the claim that the WCE line was the league's best combination when it was in its prime. The Gretzky statement's been there for a long time without any references; take it out. I believe it was, or still is, on Bertuzzi and Morrison's articles. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:19, 27 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Game 7 rush against Calgary[edit]

I have a feeling this is probably too specific for the article, but what does anyone think about incorporating Naslund's last-minute rush against Calgary in game 7 a few years back – the one when Cooke scored on Naslund's rebound with 3 seconds to go – into the article? With Naslund's career in Vancouver over (barring a comeback of course), that, to me, was his greatest play as a Canuck. I'm probably just being too nostalgic though. Because this article's up for GA, I figured I'd post the idea here first. Thoughts? Orlandkurtenbach (talk) —Preceding undated comment was added at 00:48, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If it was worded correctly, and flowed with the rest of the article, then I don't see why not. After all, that goal was probably one of the biggest goals the Canucks scored this decade. And it wouldn't be that unusual. I wrote in Linden scoring both Canuck goals in game 7 of the 1994 Final. Kaiser matias (talk) 00:58, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I considered adding it in when I first found the article to support the playoffs, but didn't because it was an assist and I didn't know if it was notable enough. I added a few lines to the article to include it just now because it looks like I'm not the only one thinks it's worth mentioning, haha. Please help tweak it if it (or anything else in the article) appears awkward. =) -- Skyezx // msg 03:21, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good. I did remove the YouTube link however, because it appears to be copyright infringement and I don't think that belongs on Wikipedia. Correct me if I'm wrong though. -- Skyezx // msg 11:16, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fair enough, I'll take your word for it. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 22:15, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

GA Review[edit]

This review is transcluded from Talk:Markus Näslund/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.
Lead
  • Remove his place of birth from the start per WP:DATE.
  • "Näslund is a Lester B. Pearson Award winner (2003) and former Hart Memorial Trophy nominee (2003)." I'd remove the brackets and say "Naslund won both the Lester B. Pearson Award and was a Hart Memorial Trophy nominee in 2003." or something similar.
  • "Internationally, Näslund has represented Sweden on many occasions, winning two bronze medals (1999 and 2002) and a silver (1993) at the World Championships, as well as two silvers as a junior (1992 and 1993 World Junior Championships)." Again I would remove the brackets and reword.
Early career
  • "Prior to joining the NHL," I don't think you need this. I would reword the rest of the sentence to state he started his career in Sweden.
West Coast Express
  • "However, his 41 goal, 75 point campaign" and "breaking his personal record with a 90 point season which included 40 goals." I think it should be 41-goal, 75-point and 90-point, but 40 goals is correct.
Done. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • How did he break his leg?
Against the Sabres, chasing loose puck. Added reference. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "The high-scoring line was dubbed the West Coast Express, named after Vancouver's commuter rail service of the same name." I think the wikilink is in the wrong place, and should be at either "Vancouver's commuter rail service" or "same name" or even "Vancouver's commuter rail service of the same name." It's current position suggest West Coast Express is an article about the forward line.
Done. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "but would appear in only 13 games due to his late decision to join the team." Who does this refer to?
Clarified. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Post lock-out
  • "scoring a goal in a losing effort." Why not just "in a loss" or "in a defeat"?
"in a 3-2 shootout loss." Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Did anything publicly arise out of his disagreement with Vigneault's defensive coaching style?
He did say that he would not return to Vancouver if they continued to play defense-first. I just can't find a reference. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:13, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
International
  • "Näslund has represented Sweden extensively in international hockey competitions," What do you mean by extensively? Is is necessary?
  • Some of this info is repeated from above.
  • If you meant the line about the World Juniors in the Career section, I've moved it to International Play.-- Skyezx // msg 08:27, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • "Näslund chose not to play due to an injury." What was the injury?
Personal life
  • "At one point, Näslund hoped to retire as a Canuck." I think this should be in the career section.
Awards
  • This section could require referencing.
Added ref for WJC All-Star Team. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 08:22, 29 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
General
  • Numbers and their units should be split with non-breakng spaces e.g. 14 goals.
  • There's a difference between Semifinals (capped and no hyphen) and semi-finals (no caps, and hyphenated). I much prefer the latter but ensure your usage is consistent.
  • There seems to be an inconsistency between American English, e.g. favorite, and British English e.g. labour.
  • Make sure the seasons in "career statistics" and "records" sections have endashes.

Quite a bit to do, but nothing substantial, so I'll put it on hold. Peanut4 (talk) 23:23, 28 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Very good work. I'd try find that ref and expand the argument with his coach, as well as fully reference the honours section. But otherwise, perhaps think about getting a peer review, and seeing what you could do to work towards FAC. Best of luck with the article. Peanut4 (talk) 22:33, 30 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Stats[edit]

Does anyone know where the team Järveds IF from Naslund's 88-89 season came from? NHL.com lists that season with those stats as played for Ornskoldsvik and hockeydb.com doesn't have that season. Until a source for Naslund playing for that team can be provided, I'm changing it to what NHL.com has. Orlandkurtenbach (talk) 23:27, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Retirement[edit]

Is there a source, proving, claiming or even confirming that he has retired? I have only heard himself rumouring that he has definitely played his last game of his career. But he has never "officially" said that he is retiring. Heymid (talk) 21:20, 5 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
