[edit]

Travencore was not a princely state when Marthanda Varma was alive. It was a kingdom. Some body should correct it.

Rammayan Dalawa's death

[edit]

i have removed the part about Ramayyan Dalawa's death. It did not happen during the Wars of the formation of Travancore and definitely need not be mentioned in the "military career" of HRH Marthanda Varma

A nonsense

[edit]

Quote: "He was the first in Asia and the only Indian King to beat a superior European armed force,"

What kind of a encyclopedia writing is this? The dutch that is purported to have been defeated was only at best a ship load of soldiers. And the claim about the first incident in Asia about defeating a 'superior' European army force has no meaning. There have been many other incidences of Asians defeating European forces. There are many such incidence in the history of the Turks. Even the British have had losses in many battles in the Indian subcontinent.

Actually, Marthanda Varma had very relationship later with the Dutch. One of his most famous military officers, De Lannoy, was a Dutchman. It was he who set up the first professional military set up for Travancore. As to the battle itself, it was a small time confrontation, seeming to be gigantic due to the miniscule size of Travancore. Which at that time did not extend much north of Trivandrum.

A major missing in this 'encyclopedia' writing, which can be deliberate is the connection that Marthanda Varma had with English East India Company. Travancore survived just because of the benevolent attitude of this company. It was East India Company that protect this very small kingdom from the various foreign powers like the kingdoms on the north and east, and also from Sultan Tipu.

In fact, there are this advice given by Marthanda Varma on his deathbed to his nephew that is mentioned in Travanore State Manual: Quote: “That, above all, the friendship existing between the English East India Company and Travancore should be maintained at any risk, and that full confidence should always be placed in the support and aid of that honourable association.”
