Blatant commercialism[edit]

I have removed the following from the article as it is a blatant piece of advertising, albeit for a group of stores named after the Johnsons. It has no place in their article. Shame on the person who put it there.

American Eagle Outfitters plans on opening a new line of stores named after Martin and Osa Johnson, called Martin and Osa. 5 stores are planned to open by the end of 2006 in select malls, with 10 to 15 more stores planned to open in 2007. The first store is currently scheduled to open at Tysons Corner, Virginia in early September,2006.
Storefronts will have wide entrances, but no windows. Rather than having windows to see inside, the exterior will be covered with wood and a strip of opaque blue glass. Inside the stores will have a natural materials theme, with plenty of wood and stone. The archetypal customer is a 30-year-old man or woman, but the new brand expects to attract people aged 25 to 40. The brand's tag line will be "Refresh, Replenish, Repeat" with a line underneath that reads "Please dispose of your old clothes properly." The message is meant to encourage buyers to bring in their old clothes to Martin and Osa which will redistribute them to charities.

The removed paragraphs are kinda ridiculous, but it is a fact that the stores are named after them. That's certainly the reason I came to this article (I had figured AE just threw two random names together a la the Olsen twins' Elizabeth and James; I was surprised to find out they were real people) I am including a brief mention at the bottom. 64.178.41.22 (talk) 20:51, 7 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I just poked around a bit more and it turns out that there is a separate article for Martin + Osa AND while it is terrible and reads like a press release, it was nominated for deletion and they decided to KEEP it (and work on it). **The Museum is NOT flourishing. An email I received from the Curator:
"Tonight was a board meeting and things are quite glum, doll. The staff was charged with cutting a huge chunk of the budget or the board would be forced to close the museum temporarily this winter and/or let go staff. We have until Jan. 5th to come up with ideas to cut $20,000 (or raise $20,000). We're running on fumes as it is, so not sure what else can be cut, so yes, a fund raiser would be grand right now!"

Women's History[edit]

Adding the Women's History banner here as Osa does not have her own article. Her non-traditional role and popularity helped make "women as adventurers" a more accepted group. --Tbennert (talk) 18:59, 9 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

First edition identification claims[edit]

Under the heading "I Married Adventure" there is a long, somewhat confusing, completely unsourced and (I believe) erroneous description of how to identify first editions of "I Married Adventure". For example, it claims "First editions will include 'MANUFACTURED IN THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BY THE HADDON CRAFTSMEN, INC., CAMDEN, N.J.'" on the copyright page. I happen to own a copy of this book that's inscribed by Osa and dated "March 2, 1940" in her own hand; this date was just 3 months after the book was first released. The copyright page of my copy bears no such phrase; it merely reads "Copyright 1940, by / Osa Johnson / Printed in the United States of America". As the sales of the book took off during 1940 (it became the bestselling nonfiction book of the year), the title was reprinted at least 6 times, but each subsequent printing bore the notation of which printing it was; the first edition did not. Since the claims here for identification are unreliable and unsourced, I think they should be removed. Occam's Shaver (talk) 07:20, 14 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
