the fourth son[edit]

I've heard the cadency-martlet explained thus: the first son inherits the land, the second and third traditionally go into the Church and the Army, and the fourth has no place to land. Is this worth putting in the article? —Tamfang 17:31, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes! If you've got a source! (Lobsterthermidor (talk) 19:02, 19 April 2014 (UTC))[reply]

is a martlet an acctual name for a swallow or swift? i heard that its a old british name for one od these //friz. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 72.70.243.112 (talk) 11:24, August 27, 2007 (UTC)

I removed "mythical" in the description of the martlet, since it (to my knowledge) is not a bird connected in any way to mythology. Rather, "martlet" is another English name for a swift, which is a small bird with inconspicuous legs. Like many things in heraldry, the martlet is an unrealistic or antique version of a real thing. 156.34.62.43 (talk) 23:58, 3 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change of reference links[edit]

Please change references to www.briantimms.net or www.briantimms.com to www.briantimms.fr, which is the authentic site. The first two no longer exist. Thank you. Brian Timms --Clodagh1 (talk) 09:47, 23 July 2013 (UTC)--Clodagh1 (talk) 09:46, 23 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

French merlette[edit]

There is much needed emphasis in this article on distinguishing between the English martlet and the French merlette, which are completely different. Unfortunately wiki commons has placed merlettes in the category martlet, possibly due to French contributors not appreciating the difference.
