Proposed Traveston Dam

[edit]

The section regarding the proposed Traveston Dam is biased. There are many in the area who would disagree with many of the statements in this section.

- Well if there is evidence against the statements edit it and find information that contradicts what is said to make it more complete. Which bits are disputed? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.139.129.226 (talk) 06:20, 28 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How is Mikhail Gorbachev qualified to advise Queensland residents about the construction of dams in Australia?

I have changed the sentence:

"Local residents oppose the dam proposal on a variety of grounds..." to:

"Some local residents oppose the dam proposal on a variety of grounds..."

Peter Resch 03:49, 27 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

    • The article does offer a bias point of view worthy of concern, focusing on the argument against the creation of the dam. However, it does provide good insight into the overwhealming sentiment of the local people affected. I can assure you few locals are in favour.

-Gympie resident.

  • I am also a local resident and supported the construction of the dam. I agree this article needs to be watched closely for biased points of view. I know from personal experience that many people who supported the dam or weren't opposed pretended to be for the sake of not causing a raucous or backlash from people who were feeling angry and upset about the dam's announcement. A majority probably did oppose the dam but it was by no means a vast majority. Changing from 'Local residents' to 'Some local residents' or "A number of..." is correct.
    • I have taken the old reference to Gorbachev out of the article - it adds little. Many of the references in this article appear quite dated. I will try to update the page with better and more recent references sometime soon. = Steve Burgess.

There is plenty of evidence of strong local opposition to the proposed dam

[edit]

I included some documented evidence of strong local opposition to the dam in response to Peter's concerns about bias.

I don't know who put the Gorbachov comment into the article, and I agree that it is a very general statement and therefore adds little to an article specifically on the Mary River. However, I am aware of the context, and I feel that it is defendable within the context. The statement was made in direct response to questioning about the Traveston Crossing Dam when Gorbachov was sharing the floor of an international public forum with the Queensland Premier - so it does have a specific contextual relevance. Green Cross International is an international organization with a specific charter to alleviate conflicts over water infrastructure and thus it's Chairman is well qualified to comment on the matter.

Steve Burgess.

Why not have a section titled opposition to the dam and another support for the dam. And those in support can write all that is in support and those against can write all that is against it? Just a suggestion! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 144.139.133.169 (talk) 08:29, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

To prevent duplication can we try to keep sections and material like Public Opposition to Dam on the Traveston Crossing Dam only. This page should just have summaries on the dam and more information on all the other more typically relevant aspects of the river such as water quality, land use, vegetation cover, protected areas, bridges and recreational activities. - Shiftchange (talk) 01:25, 5 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The mouth coordinates are incorrect. Anthony Staunton (talk) 12:54, 22 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Anthony Staunton: Done, current cords are taken from the QLD Govts official database (citation 1). Thanks for spotting this. Kerry (talk) 04:17, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I am ashamed to say I had no idea until yesterday that the Mary River started in the Sunshine Coast hinterland but I aware that the river rant to the sea at Maryborough. Anthony Staunton (talk) 07:03, 23 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
