Jewish?[edit]

Where is this info about his Jewish background coming from? I couldn't find any good source online, and I've removed it until I do. Vulturell 03:28, 1 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It say on that site that "His family is partially Eastern European Jewish in origin. His father and all his uncles were killed in World War I." Didn't mean that he went to the temple every Saturday. Since when did sir matt play for liverpool in the 50's and 60's??

What is the significance of his religious upbringong, he was a footballer and manager, and others in Wikepaedia do not have their religion stated unless entirely significant to certain facts. (TJM)

It was Jackie Blanchflower not Danny.

If you knew anything about the man his religion was central to his life and many of his staff at MUFC eg Tom Curry, Bert Whalley. Beatles[edit]

Along with British prime ministers Wilson and Heath, 19th-century circus impressario Mr. Kite, and possibly a young kindergarten student named Lucy, Matt Busby is one of a few real-life people mentioned in a Beatles' song, the John Lennon-sung "Dig It" that appears on "Let It Be". He's thrown in at the end of a Lennon stream-of-consciousness rant that also mentions the BBC, B.B. King, and Doris Day. Not sure if this should be mentioned in the Busby entry, since it was obviously not a signature moment in his soccer career, but it's the only reason this American knows of him.

Scotland Manager[edit]

Sir Matt also managed Scotland for 3 months between Sept 1958 and Dec 1958. He was in charge of 2 games in the British Home Championship where he recorded a draw and a win against Northern Ireland and Wales.

Managerial career statistics[edit]

The math was incorrect in relation to Sir Busby's winning percentage. I fixed it. A draw would equal the sum divided by two (1 = 0.5) adding the sum of wins (equaling 1) and dividing the result to the number of games coached. Place of birth[edit]

Clarification needed[edit]

"Busby would often accompany his father down into the coal pits", says the second paragraph in the "Early life" section. I think this statement needs to be clarified; was it his father – who was killed when Busby was eight – or was it his stepfather whom he would accompany? If it was his real father, it means that he went down into the coal pits before the age of eight. I know that this was in the 1910s or 1920s, but it still seems questionable to me. Lithuanian heritage?[edit]

There is actually no reliable evidence for this whatsoever. This "fact" appears to have been added to the article about three years ago by User:VI3NA5, who has now returned to Wikipedia using both that account and a pseudonym User:IV13NA5. Unfortunately, it seems this info was included in the article long enough for people to notice and now we have pages such as this regurgitating unsubstantiated info. If anyone can find a pre-2013 source for Busby's Lithuanian heritage, that would be amazing, but I wouldn't recommend taking any facts added by VI3NA5 or his alias as gospel. – PeeJay 20:22, 8 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Came across this four years later due to looking up other genuine Bellshill Lithuanian players. I have had a look on Ancestry where someone has provided copies of birth certificates etc and there's no Lithuanian links in the previous two generations at least - before which it would be very unlikely, as the immigration to Scotland was in the late 19th and early 20th century. Unless its been hidden very, very well, I would say its not true. There is a 2008 article here which mentions a link anecdotally, but this doesn't appear to be borne out by the paperwork. Certainly his parents were not directly Lithuanian and changed their name (or had it done for them by clerks) as occurred quite often at the time. For what it's worth, he is of Irish descent from 3 grandparents,including the Busby side which comes from Antrim. But there's have to be independent sources for that to be added if anyone's desparate to include it. Crowsus (talk) 09:44, 5 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
