Depends on how you define "Slovak". For our Slovak Wikipedia editors, any famous person who has ever set a toe on today's Slovakia is theirs for the taking.

I have removed the clearly pro-Slovak bias in the article. There is absolutely no proof that Hell was Slovak, the most likely scenario was that he was a German-speaking Hungarus. Enigma1 01:19, 18 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Until our Slovak co-editors [insults removed] provide us an exact proof that Maximilian Hell was Slovak, any reference to his Slovak ethnicity will be removed.

I will redefine Hell's nationality in light of the following letter by Hell himself to Pater Höller, written in Vardö, April 6 , 1769. (Pls. see link on [1] In that letter Hell confessed that he was Hungarian. "Jó Isten, ki hitte volna, hogy mi ugyanazon õsatyától való testvéreket fogunk találni a lapp népben! Magyarok, testvéreink, a mi magyar nyelvünket beszélik, a mi magyar ruhánkat hordják, a mi régi magyar atyáink szokásai szerint élnek, egyszóval, testvéreink" In translation: "God God, who had believed that we will find brothers from the same ancient father in the Lapp people! Hungarians, our brethren, who speak our Hungarian language, wear our Hungarian clothes, live according to the customs of our Hungarian fathers, summing it up: our brethren." I would not say that he was Hungarian. He had German name, he was born and raised in town full of Germans and also there was not Hungarian school in Selmecbánya those days. After reading this article I know more about his ethnicity and cultural identifiers than I do about what the subject did. I assume there is some reason he has an article, but I'm not sure what that reason is. Also, he changed his surname to 'Hell', but his father's surname was already 'Hell'?
