DMY > MDY

Why is the article formatted as MDY rather than DMY? The vast majority of the world uses either DMY or YMD, not MDY. 2001:8003:2BB1:2300:2C78:A691:35A:481D (talk) 12:44, 1 May 2018 (UTC)

Edit request from Bendernas, 2 May 2011

Add Osama Bin Laden to deaths on May 1st? (B. 1957)?

Bendernas (talk) 14:47, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

When it happened, it was May 1st here, but May 2nd there. I believe we're going with the local time for this one, so his death is being recorded as May 2nd, not May 1st, which is why he isn't on this page. SilverserenC 14:49, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Osama bin Laden

Not done: Already discussed above: we don't yet have solid confirmation on the exact date, so we need that first before adding. Qwyrxian (talk) 05:58, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Petrol Loco?

I have removed the following:

First unsolicited email / spam

Quote for May 1: "1978 - The first e-mail spam was sent by a DEC marketing representative to every ARPANET address on the west coast of the United States."

From where does this claim originate? (It is not referenced in any of linked articles.) This is an important claim which requires some references. -- Libertas 10:30, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Update: I found Brad Templeton's Blog, which appears to be as reliable as internet pages can be; see http://www.templetons.com/brad/spamreact.html . Note, however, that even he admits that the email is only "Possibly the first spam". So I guess we can consider http://www.templetons.com/brad/spamreact.html as the reference. -- Libertas 10:45, 2 May 2006 (UTC)

Ayrton Senna

Shouldn't we put Ayrton Senna here, who died at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix on 1 May 1994? Mainly because this is probably the most memorable death by a majority of F1 fans... --Skully Collins Review Me! Please? 15:55, 28 July 2006 (UTC)

Someone has listed him under deaths now. Fabricationary 23:24, 28 July 2006 (UTC)
Yeah, but surely he is notable enough to be put into the On This Day, isn't he? --Skully Collins Review Me! Please? 12:36, 31 July 2006 (UTC)
Probably not. If you read the criteria for selected anniversaries, you'll see that "the event and the selected article (bolded item) needs to be listed in the Events section of its corresponding day of the year article." Deaths are listed in deaths, not events. Fabricationary 15:33, 31 July 2006 (UTC)

Error?

"# 1945 - Soviet troops raise the Soviet Flag over the Reichstag, in Berlin" However, this event is listed as May 2nd in the chronology of 1945

For the sake of clarification, the reason it seemed reasonable to remove Labor Day for the May 1 article is that the Labor Day article makes no mention of the holiday occurring on May 1 in any other country. This could surely be a fault in the article, but it seems that if the May 1 article makes the claim, it should at least be described in the Labor Day article to avoid this kind of confusion. Murderbike (talk) 18:50, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Good point. It is the case the workers are recognized in most countries on May 1, but we need to have that in the appropriate article. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 21:57, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
Found it. It's Labour Day. — Arthur Rubin (talk) 21:59, 14 March 2008 (UTC)
That def works better. Murderbike (talk) 22:03, 14 March 2008 (UTC)

Birthdays

Consider adding Yasmina Reza.

She has her own wikipedia article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yasmina_Reza

That says either 1959 or 1960.

The New Yorker, March 16, 2009, has it at 1959. —Preceding unsigned comment added by WoodenBooks (talkcontribs) 21:20, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

Error in Birthday

Just noting that it says that Justin Bieber was born May 1st, 1994, when he was actually born March 1st, so he should not be on that list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 98.247.130.182 (talk) 04:14, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Bin Laden death reports

So far, reports indicate that Bin Laden may have been killed within the last week. If that's the case his death should not be listed on this page. Once the true details of his death are found and a global impact of the reports can be measured, the fact that it was announced on this day might go here under the events section. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 03:19, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

Guam commonwealth

I believe that Guam is actually an organized, unincorporated territory rather than a commonwealth as per Guam Organic Act, 1 Aug 1950. For references see "Guam". The World Factbook (2024 ed.). Central Intelligence Agency. and 48 U.S.C. § 1421. --Johann1870 (talk) 12:45, 2 May 2011 (UTC)

St Walpurga

I don't think anyone celebrates the date of canonization of St Walpurga. Is this one of the 'various days' mentioned in the article? A source would be good. --Richardson mcphillips (talk) 19:28, 1 May 2016 (UTC)

Her article says "the day of her canonization, 1 May (possibly 870), was also celebrated during the high medieval period" implying it is no longer celebrated. I suggest she be removed from today's article.--Richardson mcphillips (talk) 17:40, 1 May 2019 (UTC)

Cleanup of births and deaths

In accordance with the guidelines, I'm continuing to weed the Births and Deaths sections by removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages. Where possible, these have been transferred to the relevant Year in Topic articles. As well as making the lists more manageable, this will help with the globalization effort.Deb (talk) 13:11, 8 May 2016 (UTC)

@Deb: WP:BIRTHDOY doesn't say anything about needing entries in 5 or more Wikipedia languages to qualify. Is there another source for this? If not, and if you are going to use this as a criterion, wouldn't it be a good idea to generate consensus for it first, and then modify WP:BIRTHDOY accordingly? Anomalocaris (talk) 15:22, 8 May 2016‎
See Wikipedia talk:Days of the year and its archives. Deb (talk) 16:06, 8 May 2016 (UTC)
@Deb: @Mufka: Deb, please "Ping" me next time you reply, so I know. The most recent discussions on this topic was at Wikipedia talk:Days of the year/Archive 4#June 11 and removal of entries by Deb, which ran from 17 December 2014 to 15 April 2015. There was no consensus. Near the end of the discussion was this:
@Deb. If the pruning taking place is "in accordance with guidelines" and you're "removing entries for celebrities with 0-4 articles in other languages", that criteria must be part of the guideline. If consensus doesn't exist to put it in the guideline, then consensus doesn't exist to continue the activity. -- Mufka (u) (t) (c) 17:05, 12 April 2015 (UTC)
It doesn't work well for individual Wikipedia editors to have their own rules that operate at cross purposes. As I said before, let's generate consensus and modify WP:BIRTHDOY. —Anomalocaris (talk) 16:50, 9 May 2016 (UTC)
Tried that, Anomalocaris. Nothing is operating at "cross purposes", since consensus has been established in the many discussions that these sections are too long and need work. It's just how to go about it that we haven't reached agreement on. WP:BIRTHDOY already says that having a Wikipedia article is a "minimum requirement" for inclusion. Also, you're mistaken in thinking that the last discussion was in April 2015, plus the quoted comment from Mufka is not the final one in that discussion - it's just one of a huge number of comments. The most recent discussion takes up most of the current Wikipedia talk:Days of the year page and ended about 3 months ago.Deb (talk) 11:58, 10 May 2016 (UTC)
