Palestinian death toll update[edit]

According to AP[1] the death toll has risen to 20, "including at least eight militants". It's also important to separate militants from civilians. Since this is a reliable source, I think we can safely update the number of dead to include civilians and militants (12 civilians, 8 militants).Alex.osheter (talk) 18:48, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That would be OR. You can 20 dead, of which at least 8 are militants. Not all of the remaining 12 are civilian per the report.Icewhiz (talk) 18:43, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
You're right. If we can find a more accurate source that counts who the remaining 12 are, that'd be great. Until then, maybe list 20 (of which) 8 militants? That would be the most correct wording. Alex.osheter (talk) 18:48, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
At least 8, not 8. Militant classification in real time is always a matter of estimates and collating Islamic Jihad, Hamas, Fatah, and other wings announcing sahids.Icewhiz (talk) 18:51, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Agreed, please update Alex.osheter (talk) 19:38, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Palestinian death toll now 23. Another needed addition is the 2 Israeli soldiers wounded in a mortar attack, to both the infobox and the main part of the article, under the 5 May section.
Please excuse if I am editing in the wrong area. I just wanted to note an error regarding death toll, pregnant Palestinian woman and child were fatally wounded by missiles from Gaza, by a Jihadi. 195.91.18.62 (talk) 20:06, 5 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

International response[edit]

  • Argentina Jorge Faurie, Minister of Foreign Affairs issued a statement: The Argentine Government condemns the indiscriminate firing of rockets from Gaza against civilians in Israel. Argentina recognizes the right of the State of Israel to live in peace with its neighbors.[2]
  • Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu : Targeting of @AnadoluAgency #Gaza office is new example of Israel’s unrestrained aggression. #Israeli violence against innocent people w/out distinction is a crime against humanity. Those who encourage Israel are also guilty. Will keep defending #Palestinian cause, even if alone.[3]
  • Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan : We strongly condemn Israel’s attack against Anadolu Agency’s office in Gaza. Turkey and Anadolu Agency will continue to tell the world about Israeli terrorism and atrocities in Gaza and other parts of Palestine despite such attacks.
  • European Union Federica Mogherini : Indiscriminate rocket attacks from Palestinian militants in Gaza must stop immediately: the European Union reiterates its fundamental commitment to the security of Israel. We express our condolences to the family of all the victims and to the Israeli people, and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded.[4][5]

  • European Union EU Spokesperson : The rocket and mortar fire by Palestinian militants from Gaza towards Israel must stop immediately. Indiscriminate attacks against civilians are completely unacceptable under any circumstances. Israelis and Palestinians both have the right to live in peace, security and dignity: the cycle of violence and despair has to be broken with a genuine political process. [9]
  • France Emmanuel Macron : Strong condemnation of the shooting of Gaza and solidarity with the affected populations. The cycle of violence must stop and all civilians must be protected.[10]

Terrorists[edit]

Since Hamas is not a nation and they are targeting Jewish civilains, the term terrorist not militant should be used.72.22.189.98 (talk) 15:55, 11 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Allegedly[edit]

The source cited, The Times of Israel, does not say that the Palestinian Islamic Jihad is responsible for the sniper fire. It says, "The Palestinian Islamic Jihad also said it held Israel responsible for the deaths, but did not claim responsibility for the sniper shooting." --- Coffeeandcrumbs 06:40, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Reuters - "The violence began two days ago when a sniper from the Palestinian militant group Islamic Jihad fired at Israeli troops, wounding two soldiers, according to the Israeli military.[2] - says this in its own voice. Per my check multiple later sources (from 5 May, 6 May) - say so in their own voice - there were subsequent developments here during the fighting/negotiations regarding IJ's initial role in instigating this. Icewhiz (talk) 06:43, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, if there are better sources and they should be cited instead. I am convinced it is sourceable. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 07:36, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
NYT, OTOH, says - "Saturday’s escalation in violence came a day after two Israeli soldiers were wounded by a Gaza sniper and four Palestinians were killed."[3] - just placing the sniper on the Gazan side. CNN - "Also during the demonstrations, a sniper in Gaza wounded two Israeli soldiers near the border. Israel responded by striking a Hamas military post, killing two members of Hamas' military wing."[4]. Might be simpler to roll with "Gazan sniper", and add maybe add a ", possibly Islamic Jihad". Icewhiz (talk) 11:21, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I think "Gazan sniper who, according to IDF, is connected to Palestinian Islamic Jihad." is the best option. --- Coffeeandcrumbs 13:26, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
That works. Would changed "is" to "was".Icewhiz (talk) 13:29, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Why are other international responses not included in the article?[edit]

Does it only matter the U.S. and EU? --LLcentury (talk) 16:41, 9 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

660 rockets were fired at Israel from Gaza[edit]
