The Whole Article Seems Fishy[edit]

Looking at the citations, this article is cited as an independent source of information. [1] This is supposedly from a university web site, but it reads as though it was written by a semi-literate. At the end, Steve Wilson is thanked for his "contributions to the article". Steve Wilson is McFarland and Company's Editorial Director according to Zoominfo. The page is apparently edited by Dr Ron Hyatt of the University Of North Carolina, but according to this: [2], Hyatt died in 2007. The page has a disclaimer stating that it does not reflect the views of the University and the author of the page is anonymous. Thus it cannot be taken as a reliable source. We should also note that McFarland has published several books by Hyatt's son Wesley (mentioned in the obituary).

A significant number of the edits to this page were made by McFarland employee user:kroseman, over half of whose edits (to date) are to this page: Special:Contributions/Kroseman

Three of the cited sources are the Mountain Times, a newspaper local to McFarland, and looking at the articles, two out of three show signs of being created from press releases.

We look at the Journal Of Information Ethics published by McFarland, and the source for information about this is the publisher, McFarland. Including the citing of third-party reviews, these all go back to McFarland's own web page.

I am not saying that McFarland doesn't publish books, or doesn't have 50 employees, etc., but I think that the article could be better sourced, and that the sources should be independent of the company. DavidFarmbrough (talk) 06:57, 14 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
