Requested move[edit]

The Indonesian city is the primary meaning so should replace the disambiguation page.

Medan ever become emergency capital city of Indonesia —Preceding unsigned comment added by 119.11.3.177 (talk) 23:32, 21 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Malays in Medan[edit]

There are also a number of ethnic Malays living in Medan, Sumatra. The Deli Kingdom is a Malay kingdom, and it was better known to the Malays as "Melayu Deli". In fact the term "Kampung" is the Malay term for "Village". So how come the existence of the Malays is not mentioned? --124.187.143.148 (talk) 09:11, 01 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Medan Population[edit]

According to 2010 Indonesian Census, population of the City of Medan is 2,097,610 (http://medankota.bps.go.id/index.php?tab=sp2010) And I want to ask, what is the definition of Metro population? In Indonesia it's rarely used, because BPS only counts number of population according to respective administration-level, and I have not found any city-agglomeration-based census report. Thank you very much for your attention and help. DamangDainang (talk) 05:41, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

English variety[edit]

What is the English variety of this article? I see some dates are dmy and others are mdy. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hanif Al Husaini (talkcontribs) 05:45, 12 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

The page seems to use US spelling in general and was marked with Template:Use_dmy_dates. I have updated the dates to dmy format. Brokenshardz (talk) 06:48, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Parijs van Sumatra?[edit]

The claim that Medan is kown as "Parijs van Sumatra" is mentioned three times in this article without any references. Given the large number of Indonesian cities that are allegedly "Parijs van Somewhere", is there any evidence that Medan was also tagged as a "Paris of Sumatra"? Also, although this is clearly WP:OR, I've been to both places and I feel we may own the French some kind of apology. Regards Davidelit (Talk) 02:25, 29 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Two citations. They were used in the old times, thus were used in fairytales. GeraldWL 07:24, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Climate Math Fail[edit]

The daily mean for all year currently reads "26.49(79.69)" when it should say "27.6 (81.65)". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.206.181.191 (talk) 20:48, 10 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The article is very poorly written in something one can only describe as "Medan English" NOT FORMAL English[edit]

The article is very poorly written in something one can only describe as "Medan English" NOT FORMAL English. It seems many are unaccustomed to the idea that like Indonesian, though they are probably unaware of formal Indonesian, there are formal and academic modes of English and then there is this shamefully poorly article which is simply a terrible reflection of Indonesian English ability. We have Indonesians capable of native fluency in English, not this Medan superficial grasp of English claimed to be English. There are severe grammar problems: very bad wording, bad or ill-used personal pro-nominatives and auxiliary verbs, prepositions, postpositions, articles, determiners and qualifiers. I am going to edit this article. To claim Medan is some kind of architectural, and I am not sure if it is with irony or not, a "Parijs van Sumatera" let alone a cultural capital is simply bogus. Medan is not a highly regarded town in Indonesia- it is not known for anything aside from the Sultan and his palace and the city is known to be quite underdeveloped with a lot of visible extreme poverty. There is no external justification or verification for such ridiculous claims as "Parijs van Sumatera" and they should be removed. I agree with the user Davidlit. Paris is indeed owed an apology as is the English language.Pickypedian (talk) 14:04, 18 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Pickypedian: Thanks for noting. This article is undergoing a major edit by me, as a Medanese. GeraldWL 14:00, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Pickypedian: Thank you for pointing out the subpar grammar - as a notorious grammar policeman, I myself have struggled with frustration over article grammar and low English knowledge - but please do remember to keep such strong opinions regarding the grammatical competence of past editors respectful or to yourself. As for your...subjectivity regarding the city itself, note that article talk pages are meant to discuss changes to the article itself, not primarily to give your own insight on the subject of the article in question. Note that the old Dutch nickname "Parijs van Sumatera" is backed by two sources, but please feel free to give your opinion on their validity. Uaiazr Jxhiosh (talk) 08:04, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Also, Pickypedian, your description of Medan is sooo false. Aside from the shitty buildings and and corrupt roads, I feel good in my city. I remember reading an article condemning Medan in 2010, and it has grown since. To say that Medan is "underdeveloped and a lot of visible extreme poverty" so that little description was given to this article-- I mean that's the same for New York City. GeraldWL 08:09, 7 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Gerald Waldo Luis: Same reminder goes for you, Gerald. Uaiazr Jxhiosh (talk) 00:35, 9 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Major improvement to article[edit]

I wish to congratulate User talk:Gerald Waldo Luis on a massive improvement in the article. However- I still do not see any sources citing the this apparent "Paris van Sumatera" sobriquet and only two citations is really quite a stretch to claim this as widespread. Could you please explain how Medan ever apparently appeared to resemble Paris? There is no Eiffel-like tower (unlike Tokyo tower, no wide tree-lined throughfares, no large parks, no Champs-Élysées analogues, no magnificent cathedrals, opera houses, museums, galleries, etc. The most notable buildings in Medan are all the Sultan's like Istana Maimun. So could you please answer why exactly it apparently had an apperance of Paris.

Secondly, this claim of 2 sources is VERY differrent to "Paris van Djava" (which I personally disagree with regarding Bandung, but overproud Sundanese, you know)- but quantatively, Bandung has far many more sources for the undeserved "Paris of" than Medan. Medan is still is not considered a wealthy or successful city by "most Indonesians", no matter your personal affinity for it. Palembang and Padang suffer far less visible poverty and are far more unique architecturally and culturally. IDK- maybe these are the London and Berlin of Sumatra? Joke. Thirdly- the Indonesians of whatever background have no affinity for the colonial Dutch-era buildings and they are being demolished buildings rapidly List of colonial buildings in Medan- so if it was the case these former colonial buildings that earned the "Paris van Samtra" title- most no longer exist- the few standing in good repair being but a handful of the nationalized SOE's.Pickypedian (talk) 11:55, 15 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Pickypedian, a lot of these texts are made in Wikipedia's old times, when not many people cared of citations. Thus, I'm pretty sure there's a source (mostly offline) somewhere saying that it was nicknamed Parijs van Sumatera. Feel free to remove them from the mainspace and store it here until a source can be confirmed, but to remove it I think will be a dishonor to the early editors.
