  • Meerut is a great and famous city in the world -

I do agree - the love is in the eyes of the beholder. And, surely, Meerut is a nice city with historical and commercial importance. People of Meerut are also nice. --Bhadani 12:09, 4 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I think this article needs a lot of work anyways. I was curious. Can someone spice this article up with some politics, what's the city about and interesting thing around meerut. will be helpful. viyyer 18:12, 30 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to fix the grammar on this page and to bring it up to international standards. People, please dont edit this page if you have a poor command of English. Please leave suggestions in this dialogue box for someone to carefully edit them into the main page. Also, can someone please post some literature on the history of Meerut. This city is over a 1000 years old and has a lot of history. Thanks! RI

The article is very shabby. All kinds of useless information has been packed up with the necessary one in one package. List of hotels, schools and so on is purely useless and moreover stupid. Maquahuitl
I have deleted all the useless "lists" and moved some parts under their proper headings. No extra material has been written, however. But still I've saved all those lists on my system in case required.Maquahuitl

Section 6 – Timur in Meerut – is a complete fabrication. What are the sources of this information? That significant resistance was put up against Timur in his advance on Haridwar may very well be true, but to state that he was defeated and his army sent fleeing is nonsense. This is supposed to be history, not fiction. Dean Adams (1/28/07).

Relation between Mayasura of Mahabharata and Maya (Egyptian)

[edit]

Maya (Egyptian)in Wikipedia tells as under: Maya was the Treasurer during the reign of Pharaoh Tutankhamun of the eighteenth dynasty of Ancient Egypt. He was also an important official under Horemheb; noted for restoring the burials of several earlier Pharoahs in the Royal Necropolis in the years following the deaths of Tutankhamun and Ay. Maya collected taxes and performed other services for these pharaohs, including supervising the preparation of their tombs. Maya's own tomb at Saqqara was excavated in 1843 by the archaeologist Karl Richard Lepsius, and its impressive reliefs were recorded in sketches. Over time the tomb was covered by sand, and its location was lost. In 1975, however, a joint expedition of archaeologists from the Egypt Exploration Society in London and the Rijksmuseum van Oudheden in Leiden, the Netherlands, began an attempt to rediscover the tomb, and in 1986 they succeeded. Statues of Maya and his wife Merit have been on display in the National Museum of Antiquities in Leiden, the Netherlands since 1823."

Mayasura in Wikipedia tells as under - "When his life is spared by Krishna and Arjuna during the destruction of the Khandava forest, Maya offers his services to them. Krishna instructs Maya to construct a fabulous palace hall for Arjuna's brother, king Yudhisthira, at Indraprastha, which becomes the Mayasabha, renowned, beautiful and the largest of its kind."

Is there any relation between the Maya (Egyptian), whose wife was Merit and Mayasura, the Engineer mentioned in Mahabharata who constructed the palace of Pandavas?

From this angle the City becomes very important and needs further research. --burdak 09:25, 4 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lists

[edit]

The lists about schools and newspapers do not improve the quality or the appearance of the article. I am sure we can find some ways to improve it. One idea would be to put them into a separate article and give a link to it. Suggestions and comments

[edit]
  • For article structure, see city articles like Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad. Sectinns needed
    • Geography, climate
    • Civic administration
    • Culture and religion
  • History is well referenced, but some more references needed in the article. Stats, years, facts and figures need reference. See WP:GA?, for good article criteria, this is the first wiki-community assessment rating the article can aim to. Ref needed for: (examples)
    • The city and district also suffered from communal (Hindu-Muslim) riots in 1982 and 1987
    • It is the 16th largest metropolitan area in India and the 25th largest city in India.
    • Most paras do not have a single ref
    • Meerut is the top producer of sports goods(specially cricket goods) all over India.
    • Meerut is the biggest city in NCR after Delhi.
  • References like [1] may not be considered as WP:RS. See WP:RS for details
  • Write Mythology, Popular Tourist Destinations in para form, instead of list. Add a description of each Tourist Destination. The word "popular" is a POV and is best removed
  • "Meerut Institute of Engineering & Technology (M.I.E.T) which was recently"Recently is a relative term, concrete figures needed
  • "Meerut is becoming an important media center, .. Recently a lot of news channels have started showing programs focused on crime. As media centers are situated in Meerut, the city is getting a good amount of publicity on the national platform" can be treated as WP:OR.
  • "Meerut has given many international players in many sports." "Meerut organises many sports tournaments." "many" is vague and relative. Replace with concrete figures or remove. Praveen Kumar is just 1 player, ceratinly NOt many.
  • Merge "Trivia" with revelant sections or remove. Things like "On December 21, 2005, Meerut was in the national media when police officers clamped down on couples who were holding hands publicly, as part of Operation Majnu." "In 2006, a fire broke out at the Multiplex Cinema PVS Mall." are minor events, which are non-notable to fit in "history", so REMOVE.

Automated review

[edit]

The following suggestions were generated by a semi-automatic javascript program, and might not be applicable for the article in question.

  • If there is not a free use image in the top right corner of the article, please try to find and include one.[?]
  • Per Wikipedia:Manual of Style (numbers), there should be a non-breaking space -   between a number and the unit of measurement. For example, instead of 60 kilograms, use 60 kilograms, which when you are editing the page, should look like: 60 kilograms.[?]
  • Generally, trivia sections are looked down upon; please either remove the trivia section or incorporate any important facts into the rest of the article.[?]
  • Watch for redundancies that make the article too wordy instead of being crisp and concise. (You may wish to try Tony1's redundancy exercises.)
    • Vague terms of size often are unnecessary and redundant - “some”, “a variety/number/majority of”, “several”, “a few”, “many”, “any”, and “all”. For example, “All pigs are pink, so we thought of a number of ways to turn them green.”
  • As done in WP:FOOTNOTE, footnotes usually are located right after a punctuation mark (as recommended by the CMS, but not mandatory), such that there is no space in between. For example, the sun is larger than the moon [2]. is usually written as the sun is larger than the moon.[2][?]
  • Please ensure that the article has gone through a thorough copyediting so that it exemplifies some of Wikipedia's best work. See also User:Tony1/How to satisfy Criterion 1a.[?]

You may wish to browse through User:AndyZ/Suggestions for further ideas. Thanks, Redtigerxyz Talk 13:18, 16 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup and Content Removal

[edit]

Over the past few months, cleanup has taken place in this article and quite a lot of content has been removed. Most importantly, this diff, and this diff have resulted in information on sports, publications and notable people being removed from the article. However, apart from the lack of references and stylistic issues, I find nothing wrong in the information as it was presented then. If citations is the only major problem with this information, I can try to find citations and accordingly re-add this content. All comments regarding this are welcome.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 11:04, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I can't speak about the other removal but even if the part that I removed contained references, I don't think it belongs. None of the Featured Articles on Wikipedia have a list of famous people from that city. Look at these articles: Bangalore, Mysore, Gangtok, Manchester, Canberra and Boston. And the thing is, such a list quickly becomes very hazy. Does it mean people born there or lived there or visited there? Also these lists are very prone to vandalism. Every person from Meerut wants to add their name. I think a section has contains substantive prose is far more valuable to the reader than a list of people with some connection to Meerut. Please look at this page for the recommended sections Wikipedia:WikiProject_Indian_cities#Sections. Discussing on that guide's talk page to propose adding more sections is probably the best idea if that is what you believe in. GizzaTalk © 11:34, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't believe a separate section is needed for listing notable people, but I don't see what's wrong with listing relevant people in relevant sections. For example, the people listed in the Media section were mostly actors. Granted that theprose could've been better and the list should be sourced well; but my question here is: "Was it just the styling and citation issues for the removal? Or is there a guideline on the inclusion of notable peoples' names in sections too? If there are no other policy/guideline violations, I'd like to re-add the text (with proper citations and styling, of course), but that can only be done if there's no guideline against having such lists in the prose.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 14:34, 29 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
What Gizza said, pretty much. In this edit I removed unverified namedropping and very non-neutral wording. I was actually not aware of WP:INCITIES, but now I am. I big problem, obviously, is verification--and just note this, "*Nitin Kaushik : Criminal (9045380965)". What is this--someone added someone else, with their phone number? Or someone added the word "criminal" to an otherwise already incorrect entry?

Gazza, I've added people to cities, but only if it's solidly verified. I will have a look at the link and try to be as vigilant as I should be. Siddharta, thank you for the notification. Drmies (talk) 01:11, 30 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK, so I'll re-add the publications and sports section as and when I find citations about them. Since it seems that people lists are not very much wanted in a city article, I'll let that be (won't re-add it).--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 05:04, 31 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've just begun work on the "Culture" section. Wikipedia:INCITIES#Culture reads "Notable musicians, authors, actors etc can be included." So, I think I'll re-add the actors' list appropriately in this section.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 00:51, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Are they notable by our standards? Accepted practice is to include only blue links. Drmies (talk) 19:47, 3 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, most (if not all) were blue links when they were removed. I'll only add the bluelinks back, and only when I find citations that they are related to/natively from meerut (whatever was originally said).--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 22:27, 4 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

History Section Fact Check

[edit]

Currently the history section states that the city was ruled by a local Hindu king when Qutub-ud-din attacked and took over the city in 1192. The source for this is the imperial gazetteer. However, Advanced study in the history of medieval India, Volume 1 by Jaswant Lal Mehta says that the city was under a Gahadavala ruler from Kannauj and Aibak attacked in 1193. Which is correct needs to be found out and appropriate changes made.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 20:29, 7 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Climate data

[edit]

It appears we have multiple sources for climate data with the sources providing different values for the avg monthly temperatures.

  1. climate-data.org is currently in use
  2. worldweatheronline.com has been previously used
  3. rainfall data from India Meteorological Department for 2008-12 (archived at webcite). Wayback machine has an archive showing data for 2005-09.
  4. temperature data from India meteorological department which was previously used (but is still listed as a source in the template). The link doesn't seem to work now and the wayback machine doesn't have it archived.

The question now is which of these data should be used? The data appears to differ by as much as 5 degree celsius in some cases. Any ideas/views for deciding are welcome.--Siddhartha Ghai (talk) 17:28, 9 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Data about everything, which depicts the present values should be latest, unless it's something economical, because economy is presented by the year, so [[you should add the latest data about climate. Bladesmulti (talk) 06:22, 15 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
