Melanocortin 4 receptor is NOT a gene!!! But it is encoded by a gene! MC4R is a G-protein coupled receptor (GPCR). Inheritable mutations in the MC4R gene, and therefore improper MC4R signal trnasduction can cause severe early onset hereditary obesity. Both homozygous and heterozygous mutations cause this disease.
