2017: Change main image?

Should the main image in the info box of the article change? The current one is from several years ago now, and personally I prefer the proposed one taken by User:Flickerd, which is an absolute ripper and taken from inside the ground but still shows the whole grandstands. Any thoughts? Jono52795 (talk) 08:50, 15 October 2017 (UTC)

The MCG hasn't undergone any drastic redevelopments since the current image was taken, so there isn't really a pressing need for an update. However the proposed image looks good so I wouldn't be opposed to change. - HappyWaldo (talk) 10:15, 15 October 2017 (UTC)
Support change, much better image. Seems uncontroversial so I went ahead and did so. Ivar the Boneful (talk) 11:20, 19 December 2017 (UTC)
Yeah, support. Good move. Much nicer photo. Kb.au (talk) 12:40, 19 December 2017 (UTC)

Photos

I think the photos are in the article are now very outdated, as the stadium is now completely different as a result of the building of the ponsford and olympic stands (effectively half to 3/4's of the whole stadium). The ponsford stand was in fact demolished a number of years ago. maybe new photos could be added to the article that reflect the changes.

23/12/2005-Changed capacity from 105,000 to the correct figure of 100,000. 165.228.63.197 19:40, 27 July 2007 (UTC)Not only was the first Test match played at the MCG, the first One-Day International match was also played there, on January 5, 1971, between Australia and England. Australia won the 40-over match by 5 wickets. The next ODI was played on August 1972, some 19 months later.[6] Is this bit correct? I suspect the first ODI was at Arctic Park.

New Main Picture needed

If anyone has or can obtain a current picture of the Melbourne Cricket Ground (With the new Great Northern Stand) that would be great. The current picture does not represent anymore what the ground looks like and creates a different image to the reader of what the MCG currently looks like. A picture similar to this would be appropiate: Click for picture This one can't be used because it is copyright Getty Images and I don't know how you can get this picture for use on Wikipedia. Lakeyboy 03:55, 25 April 2006 (UTC)

I'll be attending the Australia vs Greece football (soccer) game on May 25. I'll try to do something similar to the panorama pics of Aussie Stadium and Telstra Stadium. -- Chuq 04:27, 25 April 2006 (UTC)
I forgot to ask but did you end up getting a picture from the soccer match? If you did, that is fantastic. Lakeyboy 12:51, 1 June 2006 (UTC)
I forgot about this! Here it is. -- Chuq 10:12, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Placement of cricket above football

Should the cricket heading be shifted above football? I think it should for the following reasons:

  • The ground was originally used for cricket and was only later used for football.
  • International readers are more likely to be aware of it for its cricket heritage rather than its use as a football ground. It is best known internationally as a cricket ground.

You have a point. However, the main reason why it has developed into the world class stadium that it is is because of the football.

It is called the Melbourne CRICKET Ground. Cricket comes first.--Jeff79 23:42, 4 March 2007 (UTC)

I agree with Jeff for the reasons given above, especially the point that non-Australian readers associate the ground with cricket, not football. Edelmand 14:23, 14 March 2007 (UTC)

Capacity

It now holds 101,000 people, I changed this earlier, but it was taken out. Can I please have it stay there. 124.181.129.134 05:58, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Do you have a reference for this number? It will be easier to prevent others changing it if you do. -- Chuq 10:01, 10 August 2006 (UTC)

Heritage listing announcement

During the lunch break at the 2005 Boxing Day Cricket Test, it was announced by Australian Federal Treasurer, Peter Costello, that the MCG would be added to the Australian Heritage Register.

Which day of the test? 132.229.116.79 16:06, 28 December 2006 (UTC)

New Images

I've spent most of the night finding and uploading a few images of the MCG. Most of these images are relatively recent, having been taken in mid to late 2006 and are quite attractive, IMHO. Here's one at night:

A black and white image is also available and linked to from the above.

Here's a panorama shot of the ground:

Here's one of the stands. I'm a South African and never been to the MCG, so I'm not sure if this is the "Great Northern Stand" referred to earlier, but it seems pretty great :)

Another beautiful shot of the stands:

Here's the Great Southern Stand and a light-tower:

And finally, my personal favourites, a couple of pics of a statue of the late, great Sir Donald Bradman, apparently located outside the MCG:

Please incorporate any of these images into the article if they're appropriate. Thanks - Cenobite 03:03, 31 December 2006 (UTC)

Attendances

In the third paragraph in the opening section it says "Until the 1970s, more than 120,000 people were sometimes crammed into the venue...." Lower in the article, the list of attendances shows that only three times did the crowd reach 120,000 or over. I think to say '120,000 people were sometimes crammed into the venue', though technically true, is misleading if it happened only three times. I think the whole line could be removed. Bay 13

On noticing a couple of months ago that bay 13 did not have its own article I created one. It is currently not a great article however i do believe that Bay 13 deserves its own article; please help to improve it. There has been a suggestion that it be moved into the MCG article, something that i highly disagree with. Thanks TS T0m s 1 04:50, 23 May 2007 (UTC)

Construction Cost

I noticed that the construction cost for the redevelopment is listed as $144,444.4 Million.

  • Price:
    • In the 'Stadium Development' section the cost for the 2006 redevelopment is given as "more than 400 Million AUD"
    • 144 Billion does seem a bit much
  • Currency: Are the values given in that box USD or AUD?

I don't know the proper figures, so I cannot correct this myself.

Regards,

AcrophobicEagle 12:38, 27 August 2007 (UTC)

I noticed this too, I'm thinking it might be some cleverly hidden vandalism which escaped unnoticed. I'm going though the history - this randomly selected revision [1] states the following: $6,000 (Original Stand) $144.4 Million (2006 Refurb). $6000 for the original stand doesn't really say much either - which "original" stand? Dollars weren't in use until 1966 in Australia, so it makes even less sense. It's probably best to just state whatever the correct cost of the 2006 redevelopment was, and the cost of the Great Southern Stand since those are the only two stands which still remain. invincible 09:23, 30 September 2007 (UTC)
The commonwealth games redevelopment of the ponsford, olympic and MCC stands ended up costing around $450 million. --Lakeyboy 08:26, 7 October 2007 (UTC)

North Melbourne and Night Football at the MCG

I was wondering if anyone could specify: the MCG article states that North Melbourne played the first night football match at the MCG in 110 years - I'm sure this is a typo, but I don't want to change it in case I get it wrong, and when it doesn't LOOK like a typo, it's more likely to be taken as "gospel". Sem boy (talk) 13:09, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

2 night matches were played in 1879; the first night match in the modern era was held (NM v Collingwood) in 1985. Therefore, 106 years is correct. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.68.149.221 (talk) 12:28, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Infobox suggestion

I'm not getting much of a response at Template talk:Infobox Stadium so I'll ask here - what do people think of the sample tenants section in the layout displayed at: Template_talk:Infobox_Stadium#New_.27tenants.27_format? (please reply on that page to keep discussion in the one place) -- Chuq (talk) 08:27, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Official capacity

Should this be changed since the 100,012 crowd that attended the 2008 AFL Grand Final is a tiny bit bigger than the official 100,000 capacity? Excellence Of Execution (talk) 13:40, 10 October 2008 (UTC)

Techincally, the ground's maximum capacity would actually be more than 100,012 because at the 2008 GF, although all tickets were purchased, the MCC wasn't actually closed and could have admitted more people, before it would be forced to close its gates due to reaching the health and safety capacity (can't actually find a ref for it though). MCG page, not Melbourne olympics

Why is there a blow-by-blow description of the Melbourne Olympics in a page about the MCG???? 150.203.35.113 (talk) 09:55, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Ranking of MCG by capacity

It states here that the MCG is the eighth largest stadium in the world. However, the linked article [ List of stadiums by capacity] shows that the MCG is the ninth largest stadium the world. So this artilce needs to be updated. (Loberttp (talk) 05:20, 22 July 2009 (UTC))

Infobox template

I think infobox should be about cricket. Because expect Melbourne other cricket ground's info boxes are about cricket.

Special it's name is Melbourne Cricket Ground

And cricket comes first to Melbourne (Where the 1st test match played) and football and other sports arrived after cricket

(User:Price Zero (talk) 11:00, 22 August 2015 (UTC))

The utilitarian one currently in use is best. It is much more than simply a cricket ground. Jenks24 (talk) 11:22, 22 August 2015 (UTC)
