Merger

[edit]

As with the Sunbury/Bendigo articles, would there be any objections to merging this with the Ballarat line article? It is not referred to by anybody as the "Melton line". Somebody in the WWW (talk) 09:59, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'll just reply here - its hard to work out how to slice and dice everything - the whole suburban / country thing is a bit of a mess, I read the other the VR used to call Lilydale a country station up until the 1930s or something. I would like to merge suburban lines with the country extensions, then write an article on the history of the suburban services themselves (as with the V/Line services) but that is a whole other matter.
I see your point about the timetables (V/Line publishes a Bacchus Marsh / Melton only one, in addition to the Ararat / Ballarat one?) but then again you look on the suburban network map they call them the Sunbury and Melton lines. I think this practice goes back to the 1970 and the 'VR suburban network' maps they had in the then band new Hitachis. The 1980s MTA maps just continued it. As to whether that means the Melton lines deserves it's own article - I'm not sure yet. Wongm (talk) 10:28, 2 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I object to this merger. This service is a V/Line Metropolitan service. It is serviced by V/Line, because the government has been lazy in not building an electrified line out to here from Sunshine. This line services metropolitan stations at Ardeer, Deer Park and Rockbank and the outer urban station of Melton. --203.220.171.11 (talk) 03:47, 13 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect note

[edit]

Should redirect to Ballarat V/Line rail service NOT Serviceton railway line

  • A "Melton" physical line only existed for 1 year, 11 months, 30 days (in 1884-1886) while the line was built from both ends simultaneously between Sunshine and Gordon (which already continued on to Ballarat).
  • A Melton service existed for many years as a metropolitan service operated by a regional operator (metropolitan zone 2 ticket was able to be used instead of a regional ticket), this warranted the original Melton line page. With the introduction of Myki ticketing system (extending zone 2 to be able to be used in regional areas), the Melton service was merged by the operator (V/Line) in to the Ballarat service, and although it was still appearing on some metropolitan maps, there is no longer official references to a seperate Melton service.

Prior to it being redirected, the article was primarily about a physical railway line with a mention of the services that operated on it. Thus it is correct that it be redirected to Serviceton railway line, being a section of that line. If it was an article primarily about a service, as Ballarat V/Line rail service is, it would have been named Melton V/Line rail service. Most of the incorrect links have now been fixed, it is only a few lingering in the services section of infoboxes that now need to be merged. Keindunk (talk) 23:43, 19 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
The name would have been "Melton V/Line rail service" if the line was purely a regional service (as in Ballarat V/Line rail service, Bendigo V/Line rail service, etc.), but as it was a metropolitan service the was operated by the regional operator (because the track was not electrified) it was named as the other metropolitan services are (Sunbury railway line, Pakenham railway line, etc.). -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 01:15, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
This page should have been renamed to something like "Melton Metro rail service" just before it was redirected to the "Ballarat V/Line rail service". It wasn't done as this would have been an unnecessary renaming. -- ThylacineHunter (talk) 02:13, 20 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
