Newer research suggests that suicide is not necessarily the result of depression, but may be triggered by a separate gene which is near the same locus as genes for depression. So they may often be linked, but the presumed causality may not be correct. Repeated suicide attempts (and success) have been documented in people with no currently defined mental illness, and conventional therapy has not helped them at all. I recognize this article doesn't claim to be sourced, but I try pretty hard to fight the commonly believed "facts" about suicide which are unjustified and even flat-out false.
