Menteith from the people of Maiati / Manau?[edit]

"From Caledonia to Pictland: Scotland to 795" by James Fraser, (p.16) tells that 'Cassius Dio' in 197 AD accused the Calidones of conspiring 'to aid the Maiati' and that he provides an indication of their location. 'next to the cross-wall that cuts the island in half'. Fraser gives the placenames: "Dumyat hill, where the Ochil Hills come nearest Stirling, and Myothill west of Falkirk above Carron." Identifing the 'Maiati'with the "Early Historic district of Manau".

Etymology[edit]

The claim made here is ridiculous. Menteith was at the time a near impassable lowland bog. To suggest a derivation from "mynydd" can only have been done by someone with no knowledge of the Geography. The previous (introductory) section is at variance with the page on the river Teith. Dwelly does not recognise the form "Teadhaich" (accented or otherwise). So as usual the so-called Gaelic is inauthentic. This is the sort of thing which brings Wikipedia into disrepute. Someone needs to get a grip. Freuchie (talk) 19:33, 2 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]
