Merseyside derby/Liverpool derby

[edit]

I have just reverted someone changing this to the Merseyside derby for around the 4th time now. Please stop doing this, I have lived in the heart of liverpool for over 25 years and have never heard it once refered to as such both in the city or out of it. Xenomorph1984 (talk) 12:14, 15 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Steven Gerrard was an Everton fan when he was a kid.Everyone know this.Search Michael Owen's interview on FHM on the web.He tells the samething as well.He has some photos with Everton shirt. So please add his name to the list.

  • I disagree, Steven Gerrard says in his autobiography that he was always a Liverpool fan and that his uncle had asked for him to wear the everton shirt that he was photographed with, much to his dad's anger! He even goes as far to say he used to wear Man Utd shirts beacuse all he cared about was playing football as his heroes. The fact that gerrard himself has stated he has always been a liverpool fan means its only reasonable to take his name off the list. Never mind what micheal owen says in an FHM interview. Oh, and me and my family are all blues before anything gets said. :)

  • Why does Gerrard wear 08 on his jersey during the merseyside derby? Same goes for the the Everton player with squad#8? A; For the capital of culture thing - sad I know.

Doing the double - controversial match

[edit]

I presume Westerweld hit the back of Hutchinson's net, as opposed to his back, but can someone who knows for sure make the change? MickO'Bants 20:02, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

No, the article is correct as it is. Westerveld took a goal kick or free kick and accidentally hit Everton's Don Hutchinson in the back, the ball rebounded back and rolled into the Liverpool net. Referee Graham Poll disallowed the goal and immediately drew the game to a close. Initially it was assumed the goal was disallowed for encroaching by Hutchinson, although he was retreating at the time, but Poll then claimed he had actually disallowed the goal as he had already blown the whistle for full time but the players had not heard the whistle probably due to the noise of the crowd. There was still 30 seconds of injury time to play at that point and Sky Sports later showed that Poll had not in fact blown his whistle for full time prior to the incident at all, but had only brought the whistle to his lips several seconds after the ball had crossed the line. It was a bizarre episode, suggesting that either Poll is a Liverpool fan or that he is extremely incompetent and dishonest. Perhaps Poll felt sorry for Westerveld and wanted to spare him the embarassment, who knows. If he had disallowed the goal for encroachment it might have been seen as dubious I suppose but by claiming he had blown for full time when he clearly hadn't he made a fool of himself. One of the incidents that established Poll's 'reputation' if you like. MarkB79 07:04, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Steve McMahon

[edit]

For some strange reason McMahon was listed on this page as a boyhood Liverpool fan who later played for Everton. In fact, McMahon was an Everton ballboy as a kid, although I must admit I later assumed he was probably a Liverpool fan due to his desire to get away from Everton to Villa and his later seeming dislike of Everton. However McMahon himself states here [1], on Matt LeTissier's Footballing Greats website, that he was a boyhood Evertonian. I have amended the article accordingly, and perhaps in future in might be a good idea if contributors check out whether their assumptions are backed up by the facts before including them in articles.

Additionally, I have also included Gary Ablett and Dave Watson under the 'Liverpool fans who later played for Everton' list, both these players are on record as saying that they were Liverpool supporters. MarkB79 06:38, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

As an afterthought, I have added John Bailey to the list of Liverpool fans who later played for Everton. I have footage on video of Bailey being interviewed by the BBC prior to the 1984 FA Cup final and he mentions being a Liverpool fan in his youth. MarkB79 07:04, 17 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Agger and Osman

[edit]

Someones added Agger as a Evertonian and Osman as a Liverpudlian. is there any truth to this? I remember Sean Dundee mentioning Everton as a kid but hav'nt heard Agger.

Notable Matches

[edit]

Would whoever keeps deleting my addition to the section regarding the 2007 derby please disist or at least have the grace to tell me why he keeps doing it. This is the third time I have so edited the section.

The Hibbert sending off was equally as controversial to some as any other event. A player telling a ref to send a player off (which i incidentally don't think Gerrard did) is fairly controversial and makes the match notable.

Please don't make me re-edit it again. I have tried to make it sound as balanced and fair as possible.

Can you be specific about which addition keeps getting edited out? I likewise seem to be in an edit war concerning mention of Kuyt not being sent off, which was also widely debated afterwards. I have (this time) tried to mention it neutrally.

The Friendly Derby?

[edit]

The article states that Everton vs Liverpool is traditionally referred to as the 'Friendly Derby'. This may be true, but Modern Merseyside Derbies are far more bitter, as a result of Everton's relative on the pitch decline. Someone needs to take of their rose tinted spectacles and clean this article up. Fry2000

I note from the list of matches played that there have been 17 players sent off since 1997 - that doesn't seem the mark of a "friendly" derby! Daemonic Kangaroo (talk) 15:29, 1 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It is referred to as the friendly derby not because of what goes on on the pitch but because at each match you can usually see many people sitting in the wrong ends because their are families who go that have blues and reds in them and they go together. ---Matt 15:55, 19 April 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Acidulantes (talkcontribs)

Boyhood Allegiances

[edit]

This section is all out of kilter, unfortunately I don't know how to change it! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Nix D (talkcontribs) 09:47, 12 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Why is Leighton Baines on the list ? Unless it is that someone know's him personally, that he was a red, i fail to see that he was a red as he seems a die hard blue. Does anyone have any further take on this?Babydoll9799 (talk) 18:02, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He has admitted that he used to watch both clubs and would be let in for free by the stewards after half time at both grounds. It's a rarity but he does not support either. His family are mixed as well. Xenomorph1984 (talk) 19:54, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tried to put in Jose Baxter, as an Everton Liverpudlian, but couldn't get it in the right place?? Said he was a boyhood Liverpool fan on BBC Football Focus.

Jamie Carragher is often quoted as being a boyhood Evertonian. However, I've just noticed that he has been removed from the Boyhood allegiances section? Presumably this is wrong?....or why else was it removed? As it does state a boyhood affiliation to Everton on his Wiki page.

Derby Goalscorers

[edit]

No good at editing here, best someone else does:) Noticed that Emlyn scored 4 and is not included in the highlighted list of Derby goalscorers His 1973 double might have been worth a mention themselves but the main thing here is please someone edit/update the goalscorers list Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 178.133.57.63 (talk) 13:46, 28 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does anyone know a quick way to reorder the overall list of matches to the correct chronological order? Per WP:SALORDER, it's supposed to have the most recent entries at the bottom, not the top. – PeeJay 19:42, 7 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Should this not be the Liverpool Derby

[edit]

This should be titled the Liverpool derby, as it only involves football clubs in Liverpool and not all the league clubs on Merseyside — Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.25.101.112 (talk) 15:57, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Full list of results

[edit]

Is someone able to edit the table so that it is sortable by the final column (attendance) and possibly by score as well? Many thanks. OGBC1992 (talk) 09:14, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
