WhatsApp and Gen1[edit]

Please be aware that Gen1 also got the WhatsApp update and it's not a feature exclusive to Gen2. The 1.1.0 update which added WhatsApp support was quietly rolled out in Oct 2019, unfortunately Facebook does not appear to publicly post a change log anywhere. Definite article (the)[edit]

Hi Mauls, I'm curious about your edit at Special:Diff/947287926. I used the definite article the in front of "Facebook Portal" because I saw similar wordings in other Wikipedia articles on branded consumer electronics. For example, even though Apple is well-known for omitting articles in front of the names of its products, "the iPad" is used 172 times in the iPad article, "the iPhone" is used 348 times in the iPhone article, and "the MacBook" is used 21 times in the MacBook article. The usage of the extends to other brands of consumer hardware, such as the Amazon Echo, Microsoft Surface, and Google Pixel.

The article you link to from The Verge is not suggesting Apple are weird for omitting definitive articles for trademarks, it is for omitting non-definite articles, like "an": "I have iPhone" as opposed to "I have iPhone". If talking about these 'Portal' devices in a generic sense (as a class), rather than a specific example, it doesn't make a great deal of grammatical sense to use a definite article - they are for referring to a specific instance of something. To use the example from the Wikipedia entry on definite article that you linked, "the children know the fastest way home" versus "children know the fastest way home" (where, like a class of branded device, 'children' is a class of something, and adding 'the' suggests a particular, identifiable sub-group of that class). So it is not the case that is is never correct to say "the Facebook Portal", but it didn't read appropriately in the way it was used in this article. The iPhone and MacBook articles are very internally inconsistent at the moment, but they include examples that are undeniably proper, such as "the Macbook family" (where it is clear that the article refers to the family of products, not a specific instance of a Macbook device.
