The series received mostly positive reviews from critics and netizens, who praised the debuting actors and the combined interpretations from the other versions, as well as the manga it was based on. Dylan Wang was praised for his portrayal of the male lead Dao Ming Si despite being a ‘first timer’ in the acting industry, and that his version is the closest to the manga’s Domyouji Tsukasa. The series was also praised for its ‘more realistic’ and less-violence ‘but still dramatic’ story-line compared to the previous versions. Although the series became a critical failure in China, it was well received by fans in the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, and other Asian countries, as well as internationally due to its broadcast on Netflix. The main cast also gained extreme popularity among new and old Meteor Garden fans. The soundtrack of the series was well-received by many viewers, especially the new F4’s "For You", which has become popular even among non-fans, with multiple parodies and covers created on social media.[1]
In the Philippines, the series is the fifth most-watched TV show and is leading its timeslot with an average rating of 24% since its airing.

Chinese names

[edit]

I don't understand the note on Chinese names and why it has to be listed above the characters. I understand that Chinese compound surnames are rare in real life but this is television show based on a Japanese manga. Daoming Si's name (道明寺) is taken from Tsukasa Domyoji (道明寺 司) and Huaze Lei's (花泽 类) from Rui Hanazawa (花沢 類). Their names are altered slightly from the original, but are still compound surnames. This is evidenced by the show itself as they are always called "A Si" and "Lei" not "Mingsi" and "Zelei". Si's mother and sister are not Mingfeng and Mingzhuang. That would not make sense for his mother at all, her given name is Feng and she took her husband's name Daoming. Also, Ximen also has a compound surname since his given name is changed to Yan in this version (which I have seen in promo photos and Chinese Wikipedia).
