I'll post a review shortly. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 01:11, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Done. There are a few notes about prose and sources, but the main issue is just that it's too short and skips over several aspects. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 02:13, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well-written
  • The first paragraph of "background and composition" has three sentences in a row with semicolons; this can be a bit distracting.
  • Try to avoid overusing quotes from critics. Summarize the critical response rather than copying it over. WP:RECEPTION gives some helpful advice.
Verifiable with no original research

All sources appear to be reliable. It mostly uses primary sources, which isn't ideal, but that's not a GA issue.

  • that speaks of a romantic ode. – This is a quote in the body but not in the lead. The article can't use the same wording as the source without attributing it. I suggest rewriting this in your own words.
  • The song received positive reactions from three music critics who found it delicate while one reviewer was unimpressed. – This implies that it was only ever reviewed by four critics. The collection of critic opinions that happen to be in the article can't be combined to create a new fact about overall reception.
  • The article should not transcribe lyrics unless there is something specific about them being analyzed. It seems like the article just copied and translated the first few lines.
  • Be careful when citing a video for information about itself. It should only be used to support things explicitly clear from the video. So it does support that The accompanying music video features Estefan in an empty ballroom, but it does not explicitly support that the clips are flashbacks of when she met her lover in the same location. So that either needs a different source or it needs to be removed.

Spot checks:

  • [2] Spelling (1993) – Good.
  • [4] Herrmann (1993) – Good.
  • [7] Howie (1993) – I don't see where this says that it's a danzón ballad which tells of a "romantic ode".
  • [12] Billboard (1995) – Does it say that these are award-winning songs, as opposed to maybe a nominees list or a list of shout outs by the BMI Latin Awards?
Broad in its coverage

The main issue with this article is that it simply doesn't tell us very much. There are a few aspects that are not covered:

  • The writing process of the song
  • The recording of the song
  • The production of the music video
  • Analysis of the lyrics
  • Analysis of the melody
  • Analysis of the music video

How much focus these should be given depends on the existence of the sources, and not all of them might be possible, but I suggest taking another look to see what other sources exist. Biographies of the musician are usually a good resource, though I was unable to find anything useful there in a five minute search.

Neutral

Not unduly positive or negative, no individual opinion is given undue weight.

Stable

No recent content disputes.

Illustrated

Album cover has a valid non-free use rationale.

Thanks for the review, I addressed the issues brought in the review. I understand that the length of the article may seem problematic, but I can only write based on the number of available sources and I have access to pretty much every newspaper archives (both in English and Spanish) and this song doesn't get as much coverage compared to the album's previous two singles: Mi Tierra (song) and Con Los Años Que Me Quedan. For example, there isn't anywhere I could find information about the video, not even who directed it and where it was filmed. As for it being a ballad, this is mentioned in reference #7 which states which songs in the album are ballads. And the BMI Awards are awards, but for the composers of the songs rather than the artist. To be quite honest, I almost gave up on this article. Erick (talk) 14:15, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I did a more thorough search for more sources. I agree, this is not an easy one to find sources for. Here's what I turned up:

  • LATIN SUPERSTARS SHINE WITH ESTÉFANO'S TOUCH. Lannert, John, Billboard, 00062510, 8/20/2005, Vol. 117, Issue 34 – Estéfano hit the ground running, co-authoring Jon Secada's No. 1 hits "Cree En Nuestro Amor" and "Sentir." But Estéfano put his name on the Latin musical map in 1993 by penning Gloria Estefan's international smash "Mi Tierra" and its chart-topping follow-up "Mi Buen Amor."
  • Producing Women: A brief sampling of the work being done by women in Florida production. Spencer, Kay, SHOOT, 10745297, 11/29/1996, Vol. 37, Issue 48 – Mo Fitzgibbon, producer/director/co-owner, Walker Fitzgibbon Television and Filin Production, North Miami: When Emilio Estefan made his directorial debut on wife Gloria's music video "Mi Buen Amor" in 1994, he hand-picked Fitzgibbon to produce and codirect. The relationship blossomed, and much of the work done by Walker Fitzgibbon in 1996 has focused on Estefan.

So that gives us the song's significance to Estéfano and it gives us the video's producer/co-directors. There are also still a few issues from above that need further attention:

  • Reference [7] still doesn't say anything about danzón or "romantic ode". I tried to check the other attached source, but it is not accessible. Also, if "romantic ode" is a quote, then just changing it to "romantic tale" in the lead is still WP:Close paraphrasing and potentially plagiarism.
  • The song received mostly positive reactions from music critics who found it delicate altough one reviewer was unimpressed. – This still attempts to take the reviews in the article as synthesize them into overall claims about reception. If you want to say that reviews were "mostly positive", then you need to find a source that says reviews were mostly positive. Likewise, saying that one reviewer was unimpressed suggests that only one reviewer in the world was unimpressed with the song, which I doubt is true.
  • The article still claims that the music video has "flashbacks with her lover" in both the lead and the body, but there is no source to support this.

Wait? Does Wikipedia have access to EBSCO? If so, can you tell me how to access it? That would be very useful for future articles especially when I work on Spanish-language songs that don't get as much coverage as much as their Anglo counterparts. I thank you for being both sources btw. Anyways, John Lannert from the Sun-Sentinel source technically called it a danzonete, which while is a subgenre of a danzón per its article, I still made changes to match what the sources says and he also called it a romantic ode. I put quotes on the The Courier-Journal source to make it easier to verify. I did some changes on the reviewers section, but I might need help with that one. Any suggestions would greatly be appreciated. Erick (talk) 16:25, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I used the search function of Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Library at https://wikipedialibrary.wmflabs.org, which isn't nearly as well advertised as it could be. I only mentioned the reception section because it uses a lot of quotes; paraphrasing is better than direct quoting, but as far as GA is concerned, this isn't terribly important. Really, the only issue that immediately stands out now is this sentence: Several music critics gave it a positive reaction who found it delicate, although a reviewer was unimpressed. Any attempt to count the number of positive and negative reviews is original research. Instead of a quantitative analysis, use a qualitative one. Something like "critics praised the song for its delicate melody". Also, Lannert noted should be avoided, because it makes Lannert's opinion seem like an objective fact. I would use something like "Lannert described 'Mi Buen Amor' as one of the songs that made Estéfano a prominent figure in Latin music". That way it's clear it's his opinion, and it also avoids a direct quote. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 18:59, 10 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, so I went ahead and made the changes as requested. My only question is how should the sole negative review be handled in the lead? Should it be re-worded or removed? Erick (talk) 16:29, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would remove it unless there are several sources with similar criticisms or a source saying that it had mixed reviews overall. It's not WP:DUE to put one reviewer's opinion in the lead. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 16:39, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Perfect, I went ahead and removed it. Erick (talk) 16:40, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like that's everything then. I'll mark it as a good article. Thebiguglyalien (talk) 16:42, 11 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
