Untitled[edit]

To be honest I was a big fan of Dr. Michael Colgan until I read in the "Power Programme" that the "power"/force exerted by an athlete when he tackles another athlete can be calculated by "E = MC2"!!!! Now, as far as any high school student knows force is given by F = MA i.e mass times acceleration; however, there is a page dedicated to how an athlete's "speed squared" is far more important than his/her "mass" in determining his/her impact on another player in a tackle.

Two problems here....

Firstly, in the E = MC2 equation, E refers to energy released when matter (mass i.e 'm') is converted into energy ('E' like in a nuclear reaction), and C refers to the speed of light not the speed of an athlete.

Secondly, the force exerted by an athlete is governed by F = MA i.e force equals mass times acceleration; however, Dr Colgan wrote a page or two on how increasing an athlete's speed is far more critical than increasing his/her mass because force is dependant on his speed squared but only his mass to the power of 1..... !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is entirely, 100%, completely inaccurate! It is dependent on the athlete's ACCELERATION not their speed, and mass is almost just as relevant as acceleration as they are held to the same power.

My point is if he can misquote "E = MC2", one of the most famous equations in science, what else has he got wrong. I mean if E=MC2 could be calculated by simply multiplying the mass and "speed" of a body, surely it wouldn't have caused Einstein so much trouble or generated so much publicity!!!!!!

I was really disappointed, because the rest of his book seemed to make so much sense, and I admired him up until that point!

I really hope someone corrects me, but, I'm pretty sure that I'm right and he's wrong!

The correct factor in a football tackle is kinetic energy. Consider that kinetic energy = 1/2mv^2. Therefore velocity increases the kinetic energy as its square, whereas mass increases it only as the product of its value...Ralph W. ^^^^
