Honouring Indigenous Writers Wikipedia Edit-a-thon[edit]

This author appears on the Honouring Indigenous Writers author list. This Wikipedia event seeks to improve the coverage and raise the profile of Indigenous writers on Wikipedia. Our planning group has had a number of discussions to figure out a way to ensure this project is working in good faith with Indigenous writers. At the core of our discussions was the desire to ensure the project respected cultural integrity and to ensure Indigenous perspectives and experiences guided the decision-making processes. As a part of our event, we asked authors what kind of information they would like to see represented in their article. This is what Michael sent:

Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas was born in 1954.
Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas (mny) is an award-winning contemporary artist. Books, buildings, opera, mural and large scale sculptures reflect a wide range of practice. This expansive reach is also reflected in his name where a surname of Nicoll is attached to his Clan name of Yahgulanaas and asserts his love of the beauty of hybridity. His early artistic exposure was shaped by a family lineage that includes Isabella Yahjanaas and her husband Charles Edenshaw and more recently Delores Churchill. Public service on Haida Gwaii began with an appointment made by Delores' brother and mny's grandfather Galaa, Oliver Adams the Laanaas Auu of Old Massett. This early appointment led to almost three decades working within the Village and National governments of the Haida Nation. Following this career mny began to merge Haida and Asian influences and to develop the innovative art form known as “Haida Manga.”
