Issues/ Improvement Suggestions:

[edit]

I would like to link this page to the 'plyometrics' page however there are a few issues that I would like to note and discuss first:

1. A list of the athletes Michael Yessis ('M.Y') has worked with is presented in the 1st paragraph, then again in the 6th paragraph. I think once is enough. By mentioning them all straight away it seems to be more like an advertisement than an article. Surely what he has done is more important than what celebrities he has done it with. Consider merging and elaborating on this further down in the 6 th paragraph.

2. In the 2nd paragraph you note that Fred Wilt AND M.Y coined the term plyometrics, however on the 'plyometrics' wiki it only mentions Fred. I do not have access to the book (ref #4: Wilt, Fred & Yessis, Michael. Soviet Theory, Technique and Training for Running and Hurdling. Vol 1. Championship Books, 1984.). In the interest of objectivity, one of these two conflicting pages should be changed. It was either coined by Fred Wilt alone (as stated on the plyometrics page) or by both Fred Wilt and M.Y (as stated on the M.Y page).

3. In paragraph 2, this should be referenced: 'at a time of Soviet sports dominance.' any examples of this dominance? olympics perhaps?

4. In paragraph 3: 'teaching career focused on a performance-based version of sports conditioning & training.[6] As a biomechanist, he emphasizes technique analysis and movement pattern'. Past tense has been used then straight away into present tense. M.Y is either still an active biomechanist or he's not. Please clarify.

5. Paragraph 3: 'As a highly respected educator,'= unnecessary

6. Paragraph 3: 'elected as a member of The Society for Unconventional Physical Education.' In what year? Reference?

7. Paragraph 4: 'As a researcher and translator, Yessis made available for an English-speaking audience an array of significant Soviet books and journals created by the Soviet sports-scientists beginning in 1961, including Yuri Verkhoshansky,[7] creator[8] of the ‘shock method’ of training, later to be called “plyometrics”, Dr. Anatoliy Bondarchuk’s signature work Transfer of Training and the signature work of Vladimir Issurin, Block Periodization Training', Extremely long sentence... revise and simplify?

8. Paragraph 4: consider changing 'and strength coaches to the Soviet Union' to 'Soviet strength coaches' as 'Dr. Yessis was a leader of a group of athletes, sports coaches, and strength coaches to the Soviet Union to study at the Moscow State Institute of Physical Culture.'= Does not flow very well.

9. Paragraph 4: 'making this body of Soviet science-based sports', There is already a 'soviet union' link, why another one here?

10. Paragraph 5: 'Yessis was chief editor for two well-established academic journals and senior editor for a Weider Publication.'= Unnecessary, as the paragraph goes on to repeat itself. Again, more like an advertisement.

11. Paragraph 6: See issue #1,

12. Paragraph 7: 'Richmond University head strength and conditioning coach Jay DeMayo is currently using Yessis’ system.', Is this really necessary? I'm sure a very large amount of universities are using similar plyometric systems. Why is it worth mentioning that Richmond does?

13. Paragraph 7: 'Yessis is currently training former NFL All-Pro Tim Green’s son Troy Green[14] (Skaneateles High School, New York) in preparation for college.', Shouldn't this be in paragraph 6 with the other 'celebrity mentions'?

14. Paragraph 7: 'Yessis participates in seminars around the country and via webcast on a regular basis.', completely out of place and unnecessary.

15. Paragraph 8: This entire paragraph should be back up before paragraph 5, where all of his literary/ editoring work is being mentioned.

16. In the references and external links sections there are numerous dead links. Needs a clean-up.

17. In general the sentences start out with 'Yessis' too much. Try to mix it up a bit, it's very repetitive.

Oh yeah, In the first paragraph there's a spelling mistake too.

These are all intended as constructive criticisms and I look forward to any correspondence. Thankyou. Jarrod Walkabout (talk) 14:52, 8 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
