K[edit]

How come his name is written with k(since romanians only use k for foreign words)? Luka Jačov 16:27, 22 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, it was not always like that. MK lived at a time when Romanians were just starting to use the Latin alphabet, and the latter came with many variants and transliterations (including a transitional Cyrillic-Romanian alphabet in which "c" was "k"). At the time, the Romanian language was itself the subject of much experimentation, and, until the 1920s, it was common for people to spell it (or, occasionally, speak it) in various and incompatible ways. This is not the only inconsistency of that period: Gheorghe Asachi also often spelled his family name with a "k", Hasdeu's name would today be written with a "ş" (since it is pronounced "Hashdeu") and Alecsandri would instinctively be spelled "Alexandri" by most Romanians. Hope this answers your question. Dahn 21:18, 25 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Jez, thank you for your beautiful and clearly needed copyedit, not to mention the trouble you took verifying the article bit by bit. I also want to thank Ionutz for having nominated it. Dahn (talk) 07:12, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
