Not Swedish[edit]

Lets get one fact straight...Zine whatever his last name is, is not Swedish. His mother is Finnish who slept with some Iranian guy. Just because he was born in Sweden does not make him Swedish. Sorry, but he will never be a Swede. I know theres gonna be arguments....but if a pig is born in a stable, does it make it a horse? No, it doesnt. Norum 14:13, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Very eloquently stated, Norum lol. If someone is born in Canada, they're Canadian. If someone is born in the US, they're American. Are things somehow different in Sweden? See...Sundin, Lidström, Alfredsson, Zetterberg, Holmström.....they are Swedish...Ibrahimović, Asanovski. Zibanejad, Oduya, Owuya....they are not. So lets see.........i.e...i was born in the US because my father was on a contract job and then he came back. Does that make me an american? I dont think so. Norum 23:07, 26 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am not sure what relevance one's views on the Swedish immigration system have to this discussion. This is an encyclopedia, not a soapbox for one's political views. Zibanejad was born and raised in Sweden, he is a citizen of Sweden, and he plays for Team Sweden. These circumstances are completely different than the examples that Norum has mentioned. It is worth mentioning in the lead, however, that he is of Iranian and Finnish descent - that doesn't make him any less Swedish, though. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 13:28, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agree, but still, to many a real Swede is an ethnic Sweden, not a son of immigrants. What does the immigration system has to with this case? Everything. It has failed in Sweden. Problem is, Swedish system has allowed a lot of poeple from muslim countries, epsecially Iraq ans Somalia. Now, there are 9 million people in Sweden..an average swedish family has 2 kids....an average somali family has 5 or more....do the math....imagine the situation in 20 - 30 years down the road. You're missing the point that others have made. Zibanejad's conection to Sweden is significantly more that just being born there. You keep referring to his birth in Sweden as though that were the only relevent fact, which it is not. As for what constitutes a real Swede, you are perfectly entitled to your own opinions, but here we just care about the subject's citizenship and with what country the subject identifies himself. He is a hockey player with Swedish citizenship and who plays for Team Sweden. Anything beyond that is a discussion for elsewhere. --Skeezix1000 (talk) 19:31, 29 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I apologize if I have come across as harsh or abrupt. I don't mean to, and I know that you have raised the issue in good faith. If anything, I have the opposite problem that you have. I'm Canadian, and we happily claim anyone as Canadian. that's cool, i understand...lol...its all about diiferent views on things. I.e. Malin Åkerman is still considered a Swede elswhere, but I am aware that Canadians treat her as a Canadian just because she stayed while her parents moved back when she was young. Alexander Steen on the other hand, is another story, because his mother is actually canadian. The best example is Puma Swede. She's born and grew up in Swedem, but she herself admits to being a Finn, because her parents are Finnish immigrants. She also supports team Finland on international tournaments. Name pronounciation[edit]

Should somebody add an IPA notation how to pronounce his name? An American hockey commentator pronounced his name "See-bah-nee-chad" and I was wondering if that is correct. Especially the 'j' in his name: is it "chad" or "yad". The name in Persian probably gives few a hint about the correct way of pronounciation. Friends with Kreider[edit]

This sentence is a bizarre addition. I'm sure he's friends with most of his teammates, just like most athletes are with theirs.
