Fish and Chips and grammar schools

[edit]

It says in the article that Tinadall attended "Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield" and that he served fish and chips from a van while studying. That might lead some to assume that Tindall came from a very working class background but that his sharp mind and academic qualities enabled him to pull himself up by his bootstraps.

In fact, the grammar school mentioned in the article is a private school and I feel it might be relevant to point that out in the reference to his education. There is precious little else in the article which provides background material. The article is locked and I cannot make the edit. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.187.233.172 (talk) 15:08, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Correction of the assertion Queen Elizabeth Grammar School is 'private, fee paying'

[edit]

As per it's own page "Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, Wakefield" is an independent public school (in the British English usage of public school). The Oxford English Dictionary defines 'public school' in this usage as 'an endowed grammar school formed in the 16th century or earlier.' There is a common confusion regarding private schools which later aped the system used by many, but not all, public schools. And another confusion over a different distinct meaning of the term grammar school which refers to a UK selective state school under the old triparte system.

Tyndall family?

[edit]

Is it assumed he descends from the old Anglian Tyndall family of Northumbria? I am not sure how well supported some of the claims in that article actually are, but perhaps it is accurate. Association with the Hiberno-Scottish House of Dunkeld is always popular, and usually hard to support (House of Neville), but I see nothing wrong with the claim of descent from the Anglo-Saxon nobility in the Tindalls' case. Incidentally the FitzGerald dynasty also descend in the male line from Anglo-Saxon or Anglo-Danish barons. Nora lives (talk) 13:54, 3 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]
