Need help expanding
[edit]Any help expanding this would be welcome. Sharkface217 00:58, 7 November 2006 (UTC)
How about information about the wars? I'm about to make a timeline, so perhaps I could upload it here? What do you think? Anyway, I'm also about to do a lot of work in this area, so I'll see what I can do about making this more organised and informative (hopfully we can also get rid of those cleanup notices too). --Will James (talk) 10:03, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Sounds great! Depending on how long and involved you'd like to get, you might want to think about starting it as a separate timeline and linking to it here. Just a thought - either way, your contributions would be greatly appreciated - also there's an award for work on this over at User:Transhumanist's award page. You might think about checking it out and getting a little community cred for your efforts! -Phyesalis (talk) 18:20, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
Merger
[edit]I was bold and merged "Ancient egyptian military" (We'd have had to move it to a title with correct capitalization anyway). Adding archive of its old talk page. Anyone want to take a look? -Phyesalis (talk) 20:19, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
- Good to see that some users are still bold. --Sharkface217 04:38, 27 March 2008 (UTC)
Dubious
[edit]I added a "dubious" tag to a sentence in the paragraph under Old Kingdom because the sentence is unsourced and sounds like personal opinion. This opinion is itself dubious since the fact that a system of fortifications is never attacked does not at all mean it is "a waste of resources" since the presence of the forts may have served as a deterrent to attack, meaning they fulfilled their desired purpose. If no objections appear here I will remove the sentence. The Seeker 4 Talk 14:15, 7 May 2009 (UTC)
Move?
[edit]- The following discussion is an archived discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.

Military of ancient Egypt → Military of Ancient Egypt –
- Capitalization per main article Brandmeister t 11:13, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Here, "both the above" means the pages Military of ancient Rome and Military of ancient Egypt. Anthony Appleyard (talk) 17:17, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- Both the above requests are contradicted by the contents of their respective main articles, which quite consistently use the lower case "ancient". Favonian (talk) 11:32, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- The contents should be corrected after the moves. Both main articles are titled with capitalized words (especially since we are not referring to the city of ancient Rome itself, but to the whole civilization). Brandmeister t 11:41, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
- The first word of the title is automatically capitalized, unless we jump through hoops using {{lowercase title}} or suchlike. It does not necessarily imply that it should be done elsewhere. Favonian (talk) 13:04, 20 August 2011 (UTC)
Middle Kingdom
[edit]I have removed the following, which constituted the entire Middle Kingdom section:
In the Middle Kingdom, the theory of equilibrium imperialism really began to develop.[1][failed verification] Egypt's control of the surrounding territories became something that the military was forced to be directly involved in. They needed to control their own borders for several reasons. First of all, Egypt was protecting her own strength, land, and resources. Also, she needed to control trade routes so Egypt could continue to be wealthy and powerful. Borders were also expanded during this time.
The writing style is roughly on a par with a sixth-grade oral report. I could fix that, but I'm not confident that there's any point. The first sentence uses the redlinked jargon "equilibrium imperialism", which apparently is a thing but has not been written about widely and may not reflect mainstream scholarship. In any event, the cited source has nothing to say about it. Everything else that is said in this paragraph could be said about most armies in any place and at any time; it's not specific to Middle Kingdom Egypt. So it's just worthless.
So as not to leave the section blank, I'm grabbing relevant, sourced content from Middle Kingdom of Egypt and adapting it for this article. I'm also placing an expansion needed tag. RivertorchFIREWATER 18:14, 25 July 2017 (UTC)
Kings vs Pharaohs, word usage
[edit]Why is it that we use the term "pharaoh" to describe the king in 3150 BC? From the Pharaoh page, "although the actual term "Pharaoh" was not used contemporaneously for a ruler until circa 1200 BCE.", we can see that the term was not used by them to refer to their kings/rulers until much later. Wouldn't it be more accurate to call them "Kings" at least until the end of the New "Kingdom"? This wording choice is not limited to this article, but I thought I would ask, since the sentence at the beginning of this article comes off as incorrect; "The civilization coalesced around 3150 BC[1] with the political unification of Upper and Lower Egypt under the first pharaoh, and it developed over the next three millennia.[2]" Wcichello (talk) 15:36, 5 January 2018 (UTC)

I propose to remove 'After the composite bow was introduced by the Hyksos, Egyptian soldiers used this weapon, as well.[7]' under 'The Old Kingdom (2686–2181 BC)', as Hyksos happened about 1650 BCE.
