Need extra sources
[edit]The majority of the article was written from the very informative biography from the National Academy of Science. I think we'll need some more sources if we are to improve the article. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 22:54, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Cold weather in Edinburgh
[edit]This sound like it's made up. It's much colder in Beijing in winter and he liked it there. Anon user 09:42, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
Chang's name in Chinese characters
[edit]There is some ambiguity about how to write M. C. Chang's name in Chinese characters. At birth, M. C. Chang's name was written 张民觉 (where 民 = min = the people). However, his widow told me that after he graduated from Tsing Hua University, he wrote his name as 张明觉 (where 明 = ming = bright) — which was how he signed his name throughout his adult life. However, in mainland China, his name is still written in its original form. Cwkmail (talk) 07:58, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
- Hmm... do we have a source for this? We could add a small section about this if we do. Just going by google search alone, 張明覺/张明觉 seems to yield more results. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 15:06, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
In the Chinese biography of M. C. Chang by Zhao Zhi Zhong (Father of the Test Tube Baby), Chang's name is written in its original form. However, the book also includes photos of documents in Chang's handwriting. These documents include his signature, and on the documents, he used the later form of his name. The Communist Chinese government commissioned the Chang biography by Zhao -- for the occasion of the unveiling of a bust of Chang. I don't know whether the government used the original form of Chang's name because they wanted to be historically accurate or because "people" (min) sounded more politically correct, more egalitarian, than "bright" (ming). (The Chang biography by Zhao also omitted the fact that Chang's father was a small landlord -- probably because being a landlord with tenant farmers is regarded as politically incorrect.) The issue of Chang's signature deserves, at most, a footnote. By the way, I have the e-mail address of Chang's widow, but I don't want to post it. Cwkmail (talk) 00:08, 31 August 2008 (UTC)
- Sure, if you have that Chinese biography, feel free to add a section about this and source it. But I would suggest not to put speculations in the article about why he had two different Chinese names. We can take his Chinese name out of the leading paragraph so as to avoid making implications on which is his "official" Chinese name. Hong Qi Gong (Talk - Contribs) 16:19, 2 September 2008 (UTC)
Edit warring
[edit]HongQiGong (talk · contribs) and 216.195.25.224 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) have been edit-warring over some stuff about Chang's wife/wives for over a month now. Really, though, both these editors' versions are totally unsourced, so I don't see how either is better than the other; I have removed the material in question entirely. If someone wants to restore either version, provide sources to support it. rʨanaɢ (talk) 16:41, 20 September 2010 (UTC)
